Hi chaps,

Can anyone recommend a really nice, large, old and upmarket country hotel in which to spend a relaxing weekend, in the Yorkshire area?

Ideally with facilities on tap (health/spa/pool?...)

Ta!

Yorkshire is a big area, but a couple of suggestions for the Wensleydale area:

Simonstone Hall - over looking Hawes, ideally placed for walking but no spa facilities.

Swinton Park - Near Masham, has spa facilities

Middlethorpe Hall, York, just off the Knavesmire. Check Johansens guide www.johansens.com.

Personally, I love the Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey.
Great rooms, superb service, excellent restaurant, very pleasant spa, great walks and.... as all great country hotels should, they positively welcome dogs!

Took our lass there a few months ago. It's a very nice place but if the maitre'd had spoken to me like he spoke to the young (20's) chap and his lady when they turned up for dinner he'd have been spitting pieces of his teeth out instead of condescending words....

...and whilst the food was good, we didn't think it was quite as good as they think it is (if that makes sense)

Been there a couple of times (Had the works do there as well a couple of years back)they can be a bit prissy at times but I would happily recommend it.

Another vote for Swinton Park. Excellent food and good walking straight out of the door. I didn't try the spa though. Get the suite in the tower if you can.

Aldwark Manor near York is nice.

Rudding Park not far from Harrogate is too.

Both good bases for exploring the area, too.
