So today I find myself passing through rural Switzerland on my way to another meeting, I notice I am running low on fuel and stop at a small garage literally in the middle of no where.

After I have filled the hire car up I go to pay and while paying I notice a small garage over the road and they only had a blooming Fiat 500 Abarth. There were also 2 Alfa Mitos but these were behind glass and even though I tried the images I took did not come out well (dammed camera phone).

The Fiat looked brilliant. Much lower than I was expecting but very aggressive. I was happy to see the seats are alot more pronounced and supportive than on the standard 500 but still along way from been described as bucket.

The colour was the off gray/light blue and it suited the vehicle well. As your an see from the images the wheels look the business and set the car off really well.

Roll on the new year.

Glad you finally got to see one in the metal mate, we've been looking at pictures for months, now I just want to see one so I'm very jealous.

Went to Italy a month ago and saw one in busy traffic but as I was driving I couldn't get a proper look at it. Never saw another one except the little models I bought in a toy shop. Did have a MiTo as a hire car though so it wasn't all disappointment.

Have you folks seen there is now a dedicated Abarth forum? http://www.abarthforum.co.uk/

Back from Switzerland now and over the course of the week I saw 3 on the road and 4 on forecourts!

If you want a 500 Abarth (left hander) and have not yet placed a deposit get over to Switzerland, there are loads of them.

Does anyone have a link to full options list?

Check out the Abarth forum, there is a thread running that has a discussion on likely options.

The white pearl paint is pretty steep, or at least at a guess its pretty steep, as UK option prices aren't out yet.

That forum is pretty good as there is a dealer who regularly posts with upto date info, obviously its in his interest but hes a nice chap and is happy to share what he knows.

Had a look over the German spec section for the 500. Seems limited somewhat. I am aware the first roll out of Abarths will be limited on spec and this only backs up my feeling to hang on for a while, test drive one, watch the second hand values of essesse's, watch the tuning developments and see where we are next summer.

Still can not wait though

Have a little play one this....

http://www.abarth.it/configuratore/500.htm?$BLANK$

It's in Italian, but even if you don't know Italian, you should be able to work through it to get a feel of what the options and costs are. Some options will be standard on the UK cars, some will not be available.

Option prices for the UK will be very similar to the GPA, or equivalent Fiat 500 prices.

Optional Spec is fairly basic, which is fine as it comes with a good deal of kit. I'd probably go for red leather and climate and thats it, well, other than the Essesse kit. smile

Andy, the Essesse is the one fettled that bit more, right? How much more?
I believe there is no official UK price yet for the Essesse kit but prices batted around range from 2.5k-4k GBP therefore 3k would be a good guess.

This will bring the 500 Essesse in around 16k and personal opinion will tell you if this is value or expense considering the metal that is available for 16k right now: (insurance factors not taken into consideration)

I am bias but as said above lets see what the future holds for this little gem. I can not wait to drive it.

Its £4200 fitted on the Punto, so its far from cheap.

Sure, for the money there is faster stuff no doubt, I think the standard car is (or expected to be) very well priced if we assume a starting price of £13,500. I guess the price reflects the fact that its factory approved, just like a Works kit on a MINI.

PS, using used examples for the money isn't strictly fair, at that price your talking about Clio 197s/Cups, which are cracking value for the money and do make the 500 seem expensive though.

I guess the market will decide if they are priced correctly. I think the standard car is, but it remains to be seen how sales pan out over the next year, certainly there are no discounts to be had on the Punto as yet, and given demand for the 500 I'd say it unlikely to be any different with that car.

Anyone know if the seats are set lower in the Abarth? The standard ones are a non starter for me, (6' 5" and not that tall in the body)

cheers

I'm not sure what a used Elise and JCW Mini have to do with this?? The Elise isn't even in the same market sector and the JCW is 4 years old. By the same argument how much of a steal would a 4 year old 500 Abarth be in years to come. On the subject of the Mini, if you've never driven one with the 'big' seats they're absolutely dreadful. I've never sat in anything as painful and that's after several years of driving and racing Radicals!
