Trying to help out my brother who's PS3 has died after taking the latest 2.52 update.

It boots and you have the menus displayed but it won't read any discs, CD/Blueray/US games/UK games, nothing works.

I've tried looking for a way to roll back the firmware but this doesn't seem to exist. I'd seen something else about putting a different hard disc in it but I think the updates are on the flash memory so this needs to be cleared really.

Any thoughts? The homebrew crowd don't seem to have much up and running for it yet.

Not bricked, but your disc drive is dead. You need to ring the Sony helpline, they are very good, a replacement unit will be at your door with 2 days if you wish free or charge.

Yep give them a ring, were very helpful when my BD drive packed up. Exchanged it at the door a couple of days later. (Cant remember if I needed a receipt etc)

Tried that, with no success. It was bought when he was over in the states for a while as such Sony UK won't help and Sony US aren't interested either.
