I have been experiencing issues with the front brakes/suspension of my e36 328i convertible.

The problem manifests itself in the following ways:
1)Whenever I passed over a pothole/rivet/drain there was a noticeable metallic noise from the front wheels. This appears to have been solved by replacing the front suspension bushes though.

2)When coming to a standstill, just before actually stopping, there is a loud ''clunk'' from the front wheels. It is not only an audible problem, but can be felt through the brake pedal. As far as I can tell it has had no impact upon braking performance, but is a concern none the less.

After replacing the front bushes this clunk had dissappeared for a while, but it has just returned and only really happens after a fairly long drive.

Any pointers you can give would be greatly appreciated. My local garage seems to have no idea.

Cheers

Something's broken or loose. Take it, slowly, to a different garage. maybe someone can recommend one local for you.

I once had the same symptom as the result of an exhaust pipe bracket being broken.

I'll check the exhaust too then. My fear was that the front control arms were bent causing unnecessary play in the suspension.

If it's just an exhaust bracket, it should be much cheaper(with any luck)!

Any news on this? I have been experiencing a lot of metallic vibration noise for the last couple of weeks - turned out to be a substantially rusted exhaust bracket again.

Sorry Mitch, turns out that the brackets were fine.

The noise only comes for me when the front wheels hit a bump or rut. I reckon there's something more expensive wrong with mine.
