Just wondering what happens to high mileage cars.

As i've looked around on ebay and ph and there isnt any Ferraris or porches with moon mileage.

So what happens to end of life cars? Do they go down the scrapper with the volvos or is there some company that rips them to bits for spares?

When does a car become uneconomical feasible to repair?

don't know so much about Porsches or even Ferraris but I do know it takes a lot more than repair and restoration work for a Lamborghini to qualify as 'uneconomical' and therefore ready to be scrapped.

Some supercar-level vehicles ARE scrapped but Lamborghinis are never so treated without a whole warehouse full of regrets and sadness.

A friend recently bought a very 'far edge of repairable' Series 1 Espada for very little money and has since made it one of the best in the UK, if not the best.

Now, it's easily at least the maximum value of the various magazine value listings should he choose to sell it, call that figure something like £x,000 or so.

Sadly, or rather, predictably, it's cost him over 2 x £x,000 to make the car that good.

These things aren't done for profit or for show-only status, they are done for the sake of the car and the sake of keeping the history of the Lamborghini marque alive - I'm quite sure the same applies with all 'old' supercars really.

Some are perfectly alrightish cars, just worth more in parts than as a whole.

I was once on a Leeds-bound train heading out of London and passed a scrap yard in which was a pile of cars on top of which was a perfect-looking Ferrari 308/328 shell!

ETA: Douglas Valley have a few wrecked supercars that they're breaking for parts.

I was offered a 120,000 mile "05" plate Ferrari F430 Coupe manual in part exchange this summer and just couldn't place it anywhere and there was no way I was going to stock it.

Advised him to just strip it of any unnecessary weight and turn it into a track warrior which he ended up doing and was over the moon with the decision!

There was just no way to value such a thing and seemingly no market or specialist even for it.

Will probably never be scrapped, unless it gets written off, but now of very very little value.

That would be a good car for a Ferrari dealership to buy and display-just to show that their cars are durable over a high mileage.

They could use it as a demonstrator!

Or better still, if it had very very little value, I would of given you £10k for it laugh

Both good ideas, but try getting say, Graypauls, to put their hand in their pocket for that....

And at £10k it would have been sat in my garage if anyones!!!!

Good lord! For any 3 y/o car, 120k is BIG miles. For a Ferrari, thats incredible. That has to be some sort of record, surely?

High mileage older cars will generally stay with same owner for many many years.

I've heard of Testarossas with 300.000+km on them... Couldn't imagine ever buying that... Then again, plenty of Porsches with such mileage and they sell quite easily...

Apparently it goes like hell!

Yes, there are no doubt loads of people who would love to have a dirt cheap F430, but how cheap exactly is cheap? No chance of getting an extended warranty so if anything went wrong shortly after we sold it we would be faced with a massive bill etc. It was just too risky to bring into stock at a figure that would have been acceptable to him and make it not worth doing as suggested and turning it into a track day toy. (if you see what I mean? i.e. could spend £25k on a track focused car or write the Ferrari off at that amount and keep it).

Either way, he ended up happy enough, I didn't have to find a home for his car and he still bought a new car. Win - win!!

Back in the day (early 70's) I remember tales the local car dealers used to tell..I'm sure one said he scrapped a 275GTB or something like that?? when the gearbox went??

Just wasn't worth repairing it apparently, If I recall these cars just weren't worth a lot back then

these were the days of E-type Jags for £200/£300 in the Exchange & Mart, my parents talked me out of buying one, probably a good thing with hindsight.

I can't imagine a car liek this being scrapped?! redface

I know for me, My Esprit is a labour of love and I will keep it on the road not matter what.

In 5 1/2 years of ownership, I have bills in the region of £50,000! (yep, fifty grand - you read that right!) As there is no s0dding way I will ever allow it to be scrapped!

Just rebuild the engine (better - we have the technology!) or try to get one from a scrappy if necessary biggrin

(heh - I still have my 'rocket' somewhere!)
