Ferry Bargain

Hi all,I`ve just got a blinding deal on a ferry crossing from Norfolk Lines Dover/Dunkerque for the race week (Monday to Sunday night).
If you travel in the wee small hours you can get a return crossing for £22.00 .........YES.......TWENTY TWO... HOLE... EARTH... POUNDS !!!!!!!!!
£9.00 each way and £4.00 Fuel Tax
For a vehicle 5m long and 2.4m high.

What a bargain.

Well it's a better bet than speed ferries at the moment.

Used Norfolk Lines earlier in the year for a trip to the 'ring. Nice enough. Even saw a few other PHers on the way back who have used htem several times.

We always use the Norfolk Line. A relaxed 8am crossing usually and a kick ass breakfast sets you up for the drive.

Norfolklines are great! Cheap as chips, modern boats, reliable service and good food!

Used them this year for both LeMans. If you try to come back on an earlier boat they WILL charge you extra. And be careful if you have a low car, INSIST on going on the level deck, I didn't and damaged my exhaust because I believed them!

Ahhh...you've booked a car/motorhome! We have to book Van/Minibus! Same size limits but 5 times the price! Barstewards!

When I loaded in France they spotted me as a "sports" car and put me on the level deck. Which was nice. Wasn't required given the MX-5's 4x4 style suspention..... But shows at least some of the loaders/staff will try and be helpful in these matters even if you dont warn them.

How much extra driving time does Dunkirk add on from Calais?

I must admit it is tempting, but the hours are a pain and for an extra £78 on the tunnel you get a much shorter crossing and flexibility to hop on an earlier train.

but, as I'm taking a leisurely scenic route down it might add to the adventure. How long does boarding take? That's one thing the tunnel has got to a fine art, quick and easy.

Dunkirk to Calais is maybe 15-20 minutes tops, motorway all the way after about a couple of miles in Dunkirk I think.

yes, but add to that that the tunnel takes 35 minutes and the norfolkline ferry 1.5hrs

If its choice between Ferry or Ferry take the ferry... I mean save yourself a few squid and go Norfolkline to Dunkuerqe rather than to Calais.

have you ever gone to le mans on the overnight from portsmouth to st malo, caen or le havre?

I am on the Brittany from Pompey to Caen this year took the one from Poole last year. When you look at it on the fare it is expensive option - but saves the 3-4 hour drive to Dover....

The overnight ferries are good - but the draw back is they arrive so early in the morning that none of the hypermarkets are open...

I am on the 07:00 Fast ferry on the Friday - gets in the the afternoon - ready to make the festivities in the evening on the Friday...

It all comes down to cost and time really. I did Dover / Dun a few times and although the price is great, the drives quite long especially late at night. Last year we did Newhaven / Dieppe, less driving, more expensive. I love the drive, more so this year cos i'm taking the TVR. I usually sit down with the lads and we decide whether we want more driving or more ferry and it all comes down to what cars we're in, this year we'll prob opt for dover / dun, but if you want a nice middle ground Newhaven / Dieppe is a better choice, just more dosh.
Also because we're all apprentices / students who don't earn mega bucks, its sometimes a good idea to compare ferry and driving distance, it can work out cheaper with more driving, as opposed to docking only an hour or two from Le Man but paying £££ for a ferry ticket.

I used Norfolkline this year. Really couldnt fault them at all!

I was booked on a 2am Ferry on hte Monday to come back... Goton the 10pm one on sunday for no extra charge!!
