Fundraising for Prevention of Cruelty to Children Charity
Discussion
Hi
I am starting this as a new topic so that it does not get lost in the other threads.
We have all been sickened by the fate of Baby P and inquiries are being made as to whether there is some way we can donate to a headstone etc for the little chap.
However, and this turns my stomach, there are countless children across the UK who are going through similar experiences every day.
I am open to suggestions but was thinking of perhaps a joint fundraising/donation on behalf of Pistonheads to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (http://www.nspcc.org.uk/)
Since there are so many of us on here, one option would be to use www.justgiving.co.uk
I am waiting for them to respond and confirm whether there is any negative aspect (tax, Gift Aid etc etc) to setting up say the "Pistonheads Prevention of Cruelty to Kids Fundraiser" and then the total amount gets donated to the NSPCC.
We could run it for a month (ending 20 December 2008 maybe)?
What do people think?
Thanks

Not likley!!! They never seem to be about until After the event.
I hear what you say but I can't think of another way/route that is at a national level and less likely to make off with funds or eat them up in admin costs. The other thing is a practical consideration - would the owners of Pistonheads (whoever that may be) consent to the use of the name?
Aside from the large numbers of people on here, it could also be useful link to other groups/forums etc.
At the end of the day, there is also the public effect. The average person is conditioned, by and large, to think that anyone with an interest in cars is a 'hoon' and 'speed nut' and does not care about society so a chunk of money coming from us could cause them to think that perhaps they may want to put their hand in their pocket too.
Whatever way, and by whatever means, more funds are raised, that can surely only be a good thing?
maybe i'm being a bit simple here, but I've never really 'got' the NSPCC and the funraising adverts etc it runs.
Don't get me wrong, I hate seeing children harmed etc (have a 4 year old myself) but surely these are Police/Social Services issues which we've already paid for through our taxes? Why should the NSPCC be required?

My wife used to work for a charity. You wouldn't believe the misuse and waste of money that she saw. I'm not saying that the NSPCC is like that, but I'd do some investigation first. The last thing you want to do is give them lots of money and then have someone working there use it to have a complete office refurbishment.

Didn't someone's daughter on here get quite a bad mailshot from NSPCC?

Please Daddy no or something

However well meaning their aims are, their advertising campaign made me vow never to give another penny to them as long as I live

Putting my error in the title aside (I am doing this at work on the sly in a mini-window!!), the NSPCC was the first one I could think of.
If there was a shelter/home where kids go for a while, then something that they need (blankets, clothing, toys, whatever) may be more useful.
I would be grateful if people have any suggestions of alternative options.

Last year, a report from New Philanthropy Capital argued there was no evidence that the charity's Full Stop campaign, aimed at raising public awareness of child abuse, and which raised around £250m in donations, would make any real dent in child cruelty statistics. Its television adverts have also been criticised for allegedly stoking public fears about the risks posed to children.
This, and the appointment of a new chief executive on £150,000 are a couple of reasons why I stop giving. Full Stop.

I would imagine the best thing anyone can give charity is their time. Ask them how you can volunteer. If there was a shelter/home where kids go for a while, then something that they need (blankets, clothing, toys, whatever) may be more useful.

Cardinal sin of not reading the other posts first but no, sorry and all that.
For many years the NSPCC has championed a message along with other charities with comparable aims (with or without intent) that has tarred all men over 16 as being potential rapists (“if they aren’t already”), paedophiles, wife/girlfriend/woman abusers. This to the point where a healthy normal ‘right thinking’ bloke, at the very least, thinks twice about having anything to do with other’s children (even if they are in danger or hurt) for fear of the way their actions will be interpreted.
One thing about all the cases we have seen recently is that the part of the mothers in all this has finally been reported and brought to the conscious by the media.
Perhaps the time is coming when the charities start to admit that not only men, and twisted ones at that, are the cause of this, but also that twisted women do this and allow this to happen, as well. Until that day my hand stays out of my pocket for them.

I'm afraid I can't help with an alternative charity (I'm a fan of the Big Issue, but others may well disagree) But I know the NSPCC leaves a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths. Not that it's a bad idea, but the wrong charity for many here. If there was a shelter/home where kids go for a while, then something that they need (blankets, clothing, toys, whatever) may be more useful.

Does it HAVE to be a children's charity, surely they can pluck on enough heartstrings of the general populace. What about lifeboats? Or a children's charity. Just not that one.
