Picked my car up yesterday after having a new "upgraded Alloy Rad" fitted £800 including fitting.

Bombing around today, some motorway some city driving, temp was around 85 on MW and high ninety's in the city, top temp hit around 98.

My concern is what the hell will this be like in the summer???

What is everyone else's temp in there T350's or tams this time of year?

Thanks

Stephen

Funny: I've been concerned because my water temp has been low recently! Even when sat in stationary traffic for a few minutes at a time - but after a good run out at lunchtime, things are back to normal.

I've been seeing temps in the mid 70s when cruising on the motorway (oil temp around 60) up to around 90ish (oil temp mid 70s) when sat in traffic after some town driving.

They do tend to run quite hot in the summer, but remember the fans kick in at around 96 to keep those temps down. In my (limited) experience, what you're seeing is not unusual but I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along in a bit.

I guess the most important thing is that the leak is fixed - at least that's a positive. I've got into the habit of checking my coolant levels almost daily - perhaps a little too paranoid, but better safe than sorry.

Leave it to idle after a run and let the fans cut in & out a couple of times, just to check, all should be OK. with max 98degC

Don't worry too much as long as it does not leak and go above 100ish, as has been said.

Those reading seem fine. It sounds like you have a mix of TVR paranoia and a misplaced trust in those digital readings. hehe

As said, leave her to idle and check the temperatures that the two fans come on (92 and 96 IIRC). She should stay below 100, and bring herself down 'til the fans go off. As long as she does that, all is well.

Since you're talking radiator this will be water temps. Mine sits at 88-89 in this weather once warmed up. In the summar it sits at 89-91 until in a traffic jam/town work when it can sit at 93, with the occassional foray to 95-96, second fan kicks in and temp drops to 89ish after 30 secs or so.

I suggest you check your reading is correct before worrying.

Mentioned mine a few times now (posted on your original post) and it's 95ish running up to 100+ at idle/in traffic. Fans cut in at the right temps but it's used a litre of water over 700 miles.
Off to Castle on Saturday to be checked.

Stephen, since having an alloy radiator fitted to my Tamora, I've observed that the engine runs about 10deg cooler. I get about 75deg on motorways and around 85-90deg in towns. When stuck in traffic then about 98deg when the fans cut in. As long as the fans cut in and the temp does not go above 100deg then your figures look plausable.

Hey,

Get someone to test both temp sensors (ie x1 to ECU for fans and x1 for the dash display). My car was running in the high 90s with it hitting 107 in town. Got Dreadnought to check it out and both sensors were 15 degrees out. Sensors replaced, temp never goes above 92, fans cut in at 89(ish).

Cheers

Ian the thermostat should stop it running too cool - which 75deg is. Optimal is in the 88-98 deg range.

At what temperature does the thermostat open up (roughly) - I assume that it is a standard mechanical type?

Air con will reduce the air flow through the rad if you have it fitted. Adds about 10 degrees to the water temp.

Borrocks. I have it. I use it regularly - for demisting.

Went up to the NEC today, Classic car show and MPH car was faultless, never went above 96 degrees so i think it is all OK, summer will be the time to watch i suppose

Thanks for all the comments

96 degrees this time of year is high I'd investigate further at least get the sensors checked/changed

its not about if the air con is on or off the restriction on the air flow through the engine rad is due to where the air con rad is fitted.

No air con rad means you get better air flow through the engine rad.

Thats what I read anyway smile

Fine, but mine run at 89-90 degrees so the lack of airflow doesn't result in a higher running temp.

I get the impression that temp readouts are not very accurate and vary from car to car. My Specialist uses separate diagnostic equipment to get a more accurate reading (prob a thermometerbiggrin )

Being a hand built car will make them all perform differently. I see by trawling that your car under stress on a track lead to a head gasket failure which over heating is one of the major factors leading to head gasket failure, not saying though that was your cause as bad design or bad gasket fitting as just a few reasons can blow the gasket. My point was that sometimes if your car is vulnerable to over heating whether that be tracking or sitting in traffic the air con rad can restrict the air flow. I certainly am not saying its the cure. Its just that the air con rad is usually overlooked as a symptom.

I see through reading some threads on here that overheating is not uncommon.

I know these cars can sometimes be temperamental in the cooling area, but if all the sensors are right and you have no airlocks then it should run fine. I had a Chimaera before this and both cars spent time in 35-40deg weather in traffic with no temperature problems.

Mine didn't actually overheat when the head gasket went. In fact it took the AA ages looking for the problem as he didn't think it had even gone - game kind of given away by the steam coming out the tailpipes when he eventually got it started again (was running Ok but lumpy until I shutdown at which point water probably dampened the plugs etc. Mine was a water jacket to exhaust valve leak.

When I owned a T350 - I took a large pinch of salt ..

Temp readings
oil pressure readings..

If you change the sensors - the values change..

The temp - can easily be checked with a lazer temp gun - I bought one for about £20 ...

You can buy lower temp opening thermostats very cheaply (< £10) and this will fix your problem.
