Newbie, looking into getting a cheap Impreza, advice please

Hey guys,
With the price of Impreza's turbo's/WRX on the floor at the moment, Im after getting a "classic" prob 93-97 as a run around while I restore my 1460cc cooper s.
Im not after spending much really, probably up to £2500 max really.
I just need some info really.
1. As far as i understand there are two or three types, a UK turbo whih has just 215 bhp?, a WRX which were all imports with 250bhp?, and an Sti with similar i think.
2. The UK turbo's are quite cheap but power seems quite down compared to the jap units, can they be tuned easily? Obviously you can do the exhaust, filter, intercooler thing, but can earlier models be remapped cheaply?
3. What are the realistic performance figures for the above, ive seen some say a UK turbo will do a 5.4 run to 60mph, is this true?? seems a little fast for 215bhp?
4. Finally any other info much appreciated, ie what weak spots they have, or if they melt if you even think about turning the boost up would be very much appreciated
