A few weeks ago I picked up my '98 Chimaera from its 30,000 mile service. On the drive home I noticed an irritating squeak/chirruping noise from the rear offside. The noise disappeared under braking. Cursory examination showed that the pads had fresh copaslip on their edges. I assumed that the pads had been taken out for inspection during the service and so the noise was probably due to a trailing edge or seating problem and would fade when the pads bedded in. This has proven not to be the case and 200miles of mixed driving later the noise is if anything getting worse I've tried jacking the beast up but can't detect any obvious play in the bearing using the usual test of gripping and rocking the wheel. Has anyone any other diagnostic suggestions before I start to dismantle things or any useful tips on replacing the bearings? I'm also curious as to why this problem should appear immediately following the service.

Does sound as if it could be your pads rattling maybe??
Jack the wheel off the floor and bang it upwards with your hand, if its the pads rattling you will hear them. This problem would go under braking.
Wheel bearings normally hum!!
hope this helps a little
cheers

Have same problem with mine on OSR wheel

Went to an indie who said noise probably caused by main dealer using Lucas pads when they serviced it prior to me taking delivery. What sort of pads are yours? Indie said they use Mintex pads; no problems reported. Have had the pads re-lubed with anti-squeal copper grease, were ok for 100 miles, now chirpping again

Am not prepared to spend money replacing pads with only 2,500 miles on them.

Anyone got any ideas?

wheel bearings hum or whine or groan or rumble not squeak or chirrup , does it get worse when going around corners or not , sounds more like pads than a wheel bearing.

The noise doesn't seem to vary much on cornering, so you guys are convincing me that its a pad or disc problem. Will strip the pads out, clean and re-grease to see if this improves things. Cheers

Bought my car a week or so ago and i have the same noise.
New rear pads and discs, my squeak comes from the NSR.
I have checked everything and it is definitely the NSR pad touching the disk.

My little test? Put some water on that disc before setting off out for a drive. No squeak, but within half a mile the little bu**ger returns.

I will see if i can live with the noise, otherwise i will go for some EBC green stuff probably.

Got to order my leven dash tomorrow...

Try removing any rust buildup on the edge of the discs.
I've had the cheep, cheep, cheep..... sound before on previous cars.
