Decide what exactly you want first. A 998 in any flavour is going to be a different experience for all manner of reasons compared to a 1430cc special.
P,
I know what your saying, but I'm keeping my options open and then seeing whats available then deciding what I want from the availability! P,
I know I'm being very vague, ideally I think I'm looking for a torquey motor, acceleration and smooth drivability and hott off the spot

I tak eit you just wnat an engine? What car is it going into, tatty or concours shell, stripped or plush interior, standard or modded suspension etc etc?
Yes, just the engine, Its going into my Mini City (See profile for picture) it will be used daily. I'm after driveability, a smoothe unit, which will accelerate away and have the power in the right places. Im after something to service and smarten up, with suitable modifications here and there. As for suspenion it will be standard Dunlop suspension cones, likely to be on Hi lo's. Basic interior, as for shocks I might look into a new set, depending on funds, but the current set suffice. If I were doing it again now, i'd go for a modest spec rebuilt/rebored 1275.. Say 1293-1380cc.. With a 276'ish cam and modest/regular head upgrades.. It will be plenty pokey enough with lots of torque, and wouldn't cost you a fortune either. Although I don't know what you want to spend.. But you could do worse than check out some of the popular mini engine builders.. MED, Avonbar, Swiftune etc.. I don't think a new decently built engine from those guys is so expensive considering. Plus with that kind of spec, it wont crucify standard drive train components either, so long as they are in good nick to start with.
