Given the type and age of cars in the list, I'd recommend a Saab 9-5 turbo (preferably Aero, but SE would do)

Odd list...why those cars in particular? And what do you want from it?

I'd probably pick either an Octavia vRS or a Corrado VR6, depending on how much space I needed...

In which case I'd say Octavia or Volvo.

Reasons: The Mk3 Golf (or Mk4) will feel like a let-down after the Mk2 GTi, and won't have enough kit/feel-good-factor to compensate. The Passat, IMHO, is devoid of character, and isn't as good VFM as the otherwise similar Octavia (which I have a soft-spot for, in an anti-badge sense), which also will handle better. The Volvo is one of those leftfield choices with enough toys and power to make M-ways fun, and will probably handle acceptably well, if you can keep it shod with front tyres! biggrin

So you're a VW fan, have a Golf GTi, you're looking for a toy and you haven't even considered a Corrado VR6 confused

If you're a true vw fan and have a lust for drivers cars, then you can't do better than a nice mk1 tin-top for you're budget. I've just finished building a GTi 16v and it is amazing cool

I previously owned a well sorted mk2 16v (and driven 8v's) and this just puts them to shame. Sod the cabby, heavy and stodgy. Unless you play with peeps hair for a living that is ;p lol

A well sorted/improved Mk1 gti is where its at.

If you're lucky Paul I may even take you for a spin wink

Also, shocking news! The 'grale is now up for sale in favour of developing the mk1 for track/sprint/hillclimb. spin

Sounds interesting, I have some plans for the Caterham as well. Just ordered a set of Supersport Cams. Looking at Emerald ECU and Powerspeed 4-2-1 exhaust to put those Hot Hatches to shame wink especially a certain retro mk1 Astra

Tempting. Very tempting. I'll need to see it first, though. Just to check it's been looked after

I agree totally. Very odd list.

Octavia vRS or a Corrado VR6 are two cracking cars. You'd be amazed at how much I can cram in my boot.

Just read rest of thread. I'd have thought a Golf a bit of a squeeze with three children.

I think the Volvo V70 is a beast of a car and has so much luggage room it is untrue. Fab for long motorway hauls too - very, very comfortable and smooth. That would be my pick if I had three children and planned holidays/trips in this country.
