I have unfortunately picked up a 10mm hairline scrtach on the polished case of my SS Sub Date. It can really only been seen on very close examination and when the light reflects on it, but I would like to see if it can be removed / polished out. Is this possible? Can I do it, using the appropriate materials (what?), or is it a dealer matter?

I wouldn't bother. As soon as you have the watch valeted, you'll pick up another mark I guarantee it. Don't worry about it, when the watch goes back to Rolex for service (every 5 years) it will be completely refinished. All the polished/matt surfaces are correctly finished, and the bevel between the case topside and case side is re-lapped. It'll look as good as new.

I thought I might have a go with some Vim powder (for those that are old enough)! Thanks for ther advice. Is the Rolex 5 yearly service really that thorough?

Try your local manufacturing jeweller.

I recently acquired a Sub and it had a few small hairlines on the case sides, and I needed the bracelet adjusting for my skinny wrists.

Walked in expecting to pay a tenner for the bracelet adjustment, asked him "can you do anything about those hairlines whilst I'm here?" which he did, and then he robbed me of... two quid!!

My Sea Dweller is picking up a nice patina - I prefer that it looks as if it's being used.

That said - my Glashutte PML has picked up a a few scratches that I'd like removed but will wait until a service.

Don't worry about it - it is always going to get knocks and as said, Rolex will have it back as new when they service it.

You could try a Cape Cod cloth.

I have used Cape Cod cloth to good effect on polished watches. It does not work on brushed surfaces though. I bought mine on Ebay.

CC cloths sound quite useful things to have around. Might get a couple and see how I get on. The watch is only 2 months old, so a service is a long way off.

One of my polished cases was badly marked. Used a dremil with polishing pad and some jewlers rouge and it came up like new.

I have taken my bi metal Sub to a few watch dealers to get a few scratches out but they have all advised me to send back to Rolex, I have not found 1 dealer in the South west that will touch it.

this may sound weird but it worked on the polished side of my gmt case.a standard rubber/eraser then some decent chrome polish.

I also use a Dremmel but with Brasso and this seems to do the job.

On a fairly regular basis I also wash the watch thoroughly with soap and a toothbrush in the shower to get any muck off the strap.
