Am coming down to the 'smoke' in a couple of weeks for a long weekend, just wondering if someone could recommend some good real ale pubs and asian restaurants in the above mentioned area?

Best place to eat on the Barbican is Cap'n Jaspers.

Take a trip around the Hoe while you are in town

IMO the area immediately around the Barbican is one of the most bleak and barren in central London. But don't despair! You can very easily get up to Camden Town by tube, bus or taxi where there's always plenty going on. Or get across to Brick Lane (not far, just East of the City) which is famous for its curry houses and where you can also take in a beer or two at the Vibe Bar in the old Truman brewery.

Barbican area - dull
Covent Garden - really just for the tourists

There really isn't much to do in Barbican. I sometimes have to go round there/Old St and compared to where I normally work in the West End, it is rubbish.

In my opinion, (by asian I assume you mean Indian), there aren't any great Indian restaurants in Central London. Brick Lane (near Liverpool St) has some decent places but not great. If you want to spend a bit more then Atul Kochars place Benares is meant to be very good. I had a bit of food from the bar and it was well cooked.

If you want to diversify from Indian then are a whole wealth of places to eat, just get googling.

As far as places to see goes, there are loads of markets etc to explore. There are countless places to see and things to do, although they are based more in the West End and Westminister areas. Barbican is more part of the business district towards the east of Kings Cross.

Despite what the above poster said, I quite like Covent Garden- despite having lived in Greater London all my life. I still enjoy the street performers and the shops around there are nice too. Also have Guanabara nearby, which is usually pretty good.
