Hi everyone,
Ive been looking for something a bit more powerful (ive got a 1986 2.5 944) and have noticed a 2000 model year s6 saloon (4.2 quattro auto).
Ive tried the search option but cant seem to find much out about them really.
Whats it like to drive and does it have any mechanical issues that i should know about before considering one?
Thanks!

Hi
Ive got a 2003 S6 and have been really happy with it. To drive it is refined but also a bit stiffer than you might think. Grip, traction and handling are great but the ride can be fairly harsh. The V8 revs amazingly well (7000rpm!) and stays smooth through the range. Its not ballistically quick but Ive rarely wanted more grunt to be honest. The autobox is excellent. Mine has paddles which are permanently active but on a 2000 model you should get the steering wheel buttons for manual gear selection. You also get loads of standard kit and space.
In terms of running costs, I get 17-23mpg and have only had to replace consumables. There have been problems reported with the gearbox on high milers which can be expensive. You dont have DRC to worry about such as with RS6s. S6s are heavy on pads and disks. A 2000 car will probably have 17 inch Avus alloys so expect about £150 a corner for tyres.
So IMHO, Id recommend one as a great all rounder and now amazing value. Check it has good tyres and brakes all round as you will be looking at a decent chunk of the purchase price to replace that lot if needed.

Hmm, i thought the s6 did 0-60 in under 6 seconds?
I was hoping it would be on par with a similar age m3 (though a bit heavier).
It appears to be well serviced with full history (audi stamped till the last one) and the v-belt done about 2 services ago.
Is there a tried and tested route to get more power from them, ie exhaust, remap and induction kit?

its a 340bhp engine, you wont see anything significant from a remap, exhaust etc imho
its got 4wd, weighs a couple of hundred kilo's more than a m3 and is auto
the 3 or 5 30i of the same era is neigh on as fast
a v8 M5 would be a better bet if its not fast enough in standard form
or you could look for a 2.7 twin turbo A6 and chip that

Mine struggled to excede 13mpg in normal use (4wd + Auto) and ended up with the audi dealer giving me a refund when they couldn't obtain a replacement for a faulty 4wd part due to factory back order issues.
Car slower than a 330i or 530i BMW.

i had a 2000 one for a year. I'd love to know how u reckon theyre slower than the 2 3litre BMW's? I was getting about 12-14mpg on short runs. Comes with all the gadgets but i seemed unlucky with the so-called german reliability + paid out a small fortune on tyres, Air flow Meter, Brake master cylinder etc. The auto box is very smooth. 0-60 in about 6secs no problems and will keep accelerating until you lose ur bottle. Good cars ,very roomy ,with all the toys but are very expensive to runCar slower than a 330i or 530i BMW.
