Hi

I have posted before ref the starter. But it get's even more fun!
I went to fit the replacment starter today for the replacment starter sent from TVR Carparts. Took the new one off I fitted last week, checked it on the bench, and found it was OK. So went back to Cerbie and found that I could rotate the starter ring gear with my finger! A closer look, shows the ring gear is turning on the fly wheel!
ARRRRRRR!!!!!!! this sound like an expensive fix. Because the gearbox will have to be parted from the engine to fix it, and it will make sense to replace the clutch system as well!

O! well on to Mat at Sebrings on Monday for him to sort it out!

After a night wondering, can I do the job my self! I can restore cars and tanks (Doing the first 350i at present) so a cerbie should be within my ability!
As I have never done any major work to a cerbie, how easy/hard is it to get the gear box off etc!
Can any one help etc!

thats not a common occurrance, but is one of the issues addressed by the raceproved lightweight flywheel which has an integral ringgear. the std ringgear is separate to teh flywheel and production tolerances being what they are many are fitted of-line so i'm not surprised by what you have found there even though it is very rare

Are you really sure that's what's happening?

Thinking about it.A pack change on a 432 or CVRT is probably easier than working on a Cerbhehe

A pack change on a Chieftain would be easier!

I am happy to have a go, but some advise from this forum would be of help!!!!

Peter yes its defiantly thr ring gear turning on the fly wheel, I can move it with my fingers and the fly wheel and clutch stay still!

Hope some one comes up with the way to do it!

Andy.

Its really not that bad a job- I did it in an afternoon on my gravel driveway (albeit with plenty of bruising). Just have a good read through Mad Marks excellent clutch replacement guide and you'll see its quite a straight forward job. The only other thing you'll need to know is to apply some sealant to the flywheel bolts when you replace the flywheel, as oil can track directly from the sump if you don't. I'd probably replace the flywheel bolts too when you're doing the job.

That's astonishing. Presumably it's heat shrunk on against a shoulder so it should never be able to come loose, unless perhaps it has split? You'd think it would simply fall off the flywheel in that case though (doing horrible things to the bell housing along the way if the engine was running at the time).

Hi

Thanks to all of you who have given advice and comments etc!

After pricing the parts. Ouch! nearly £1,100 plus the government Value added theft and getting quotes on doing the job, I have decided to do the job my self!
Sorry to Rose, (the wife) as the cost will mean Baked beans for Christmas dinner plus that's the only time I have to do the job!!!!!!!!!!

I believe they are generally heat shrunk on, then tig welded in 4-5 places. Least other flywheels with separate ring gear that I've seen have been made this way. If the ring gear is sat in a bit of a vee or a groove then that should be just enough to stop it slipping sideways. Lucky it hasn't caused more damage though!
