My new toy - A couple of irritations now solved!
Discussion
My new toy is an Elise 111R. I am really pleased with the car but 2 things irritated me a little…
The gear change. I was not impresses with the gear change at all. Seemed a little stiff compared to my wife’s TT. I spent 30 mins today and oiled all the linkages in the engine bay and the gear lever linkages in the car.
What a difference! A simple thing like this has made the world of difference to how it changes gear!
The engine idle. I read there was a technical service bulletin on this; I have copied the text below. Again, big difference to how the car idles, and also it does not stall so easy!
Throttle setting procedure for Elise 111R/'04 Exige.
To specify throttle body stop screw adjustment for correct idle control. If the throttle pedal downstop is incorrectly set, overloading of the throttle body cable quadrant can occur, resulting in quadrant distortion, closed throttle position error and engine stalling.
In case of customer complaint of engine stalling on return to idle, the following check procedure should be adopted:
1 Check the throttle body cable quadrant for distortion and mis-alignment. If necessary, repair or replace the quadrant.
2 Check that there is 2 - 3 mm free play at the throttle pedal, adjusting at the throttle body cable abutment bracket if necessary.
3 Reset the closed throttle stop screw on the throttle body by screwing down (using an hexagonal key in the bottom end of the screw) until the throttle butterfly fully closes and there is clearance between the quadrant bracket and the stop screw. Screw back up until contact is made between the screw and stop bracket, and then turn further upwards for ½ turn. Secure with the locknut. Recheck throttle pedal free play.
4 Adjust the throttle pedal downstop such that vigorous full depression of the pedal achieves full opening of the throttle butterfly without allowing the cable or mechanism to be strained.
