If I go looking... should I get the local dealership to get a car sent to it for a test drive and possible sale or should I go to the dealership it's located at?

If I bought then I'd be getting the local garage servicing it - was just thinking in terms of niggles and warranty items whether it would be worth making sure I did the deal through them.

Other thought was, having them get a car sent over would mean they know I'm more keen, therefore, less likely to haggle than dropping in to the forecourt the car sits on...

Thoughts?

I've found - other- dealers entirely unhelpful moving AUV cars around. You're involving a needless middleman... just go to the actual dealer and work direct with them.

I asked my local dealer the exact same thing and they said they wouldn't do it. Asked why they told me that they have to buy the car from the other dealer and then have to rely on the the other dealer having prepped the car correctly to avoid having to pay to prep it themselves.

If you take the car back to the local dealer for warranty work and the issue was caused by poor prep the cost is passed back to the supplying dealer NOT BMW.

So my local dealer said the risk was too high, and that they would reprep the car thus increasing the cost. Their advice was to buy from the dealer who had the car and use them for servicing etc.

So this is what I did and haven't had any problems at all with the local dealer.

You don't really need to do this. Negotiate the price and then tell the salesman in the nicest possible way that you know the BMW 120 point check backwards and that you will check rigorously to make sure it's been done properly. That should mean you either need to only visit the dealer once or if you negotiate a delivery to your house (which most dealers prefer) you'll be fine.
