Sure you can, when I was an IT contractor I managed it no problems wink

I think there are many people on Pistonheads who do this.

I don't think I could with my current mortgage, especially as I'm on my own. So don't think I could live on £200 a week.

can get taxcredits and discount on council tax if on your own - it will be hard if you stick to normal hours of work but if you work longer hours then i would have thought it would be possible - but i suppose that's easy for me to say!
I don't think I would ever claim any "tax credits" this is just another form of benefits. I would rather cut down on food intake or something before I did that.

I respect you ethics and attitude but you are the type of person that should take a tax credit if it is applicable, you have paid taxes, have you not.
Take a good look at where the money is going at present yikes

I thought PH was a haven for the rich, elite and powerful?

Are you working out if you can indeed get away with paying your house staff MW??

I'm sure it can be done. Millions do.

£200 a week? Easy. Would I work for minimum wage? It'd be a cold day in hell...

That is just not how I was brought up.

I can work and earn money so don't see why I should scrounge, this is how I see it.

I usually don't think its out of choice people get paid minimum wage. Everybody has aspirations to earn more, but life has a knack of not working that way or being that easy.

I certainly don't look down at people who earn min. wage, nor do I respect people more if they earn more than myself.

So if you pranged your car you wouldn't claim on your insurance? Or if your house flooded you wouldn't claim on your insurance?

The clue is in the name........... Insurance!!

You may as well have said "I like cheese"

As what has insurance got to do with any of that?

My mortgage IS £200 a week, so after paying tax and all on a minimum wage income, I'd have to sell my body to make ends meet. frown

So you think NI is for working people to use who think they don't need to work as much as others?

I always thought that was for my pension, not all but part.

someone i know very closely survives, and i mean survives on minimum wage. He had a nasty divorce and came out with a few quid in savings from the sale of his house. lost his home, job everything. He has a housing association flat, and works 40hrs a week plus overtime. £6.00 per hour.

He has to do a days overtime every two weeks to live. He pays his bills, but had to buy all furnishings, from cutlery to cooker, bed to light bulbs, clothes etc out of his savings. Spent nearly 2k doing it. No big fancy TV or anything like, just functional stuff.

He is just grateful that he now has his own flat, and can scratch by without begging from the government. He worked out he is £6.50 better off a week by working compared to not, when factoring in benefits etc. In 10yrs he will have everything he wants again, he assures me, and is happy to survive on his own in order to get it. He started at the bottom in his new job, but will be at the top in 5 yrs, he has that kind of attitude.

I thought 'NI' was for the NHS.

But then, VED was for the roads rofl
