Shouldn't do, what brand of CD player is it? You will need a set of removal keys / rods, they usually fit into slots down the edges of the head unit, they then unlock the fixing tabs and you can then pull the head unit out of the metal cage it sits in. Then you can remove the metal cage by bending back the tabs that hold it in and sliding it out of the slot. Halfords sell the removal keys, or you can probably chat them up to pop out to your car and do it for you for a couple of quid.

I had a JVC in my MX5 when I bought it, replaced it for a Sony one. To take it out all I had to do was take the plastic frame that surrounds the stereo off, the spade type keys then slid between the unit and the metal cage on either side. Push them in until they click into place and then yank it out!

Yes definitely, the Mk1 uses the same arrangement of metal cage in the centre console with the head unit slotted into it as every other car I've dealt with.

Can't think of any reason why. I think most JVC stereos are imports too winktongue out

Just a note to say - My Mk1 certainly does NOT use the system as described above, as I've been use to in all my other cars.

The headunit that came in mine was hard mounted with bolts to the dash structure, to remove it I had to pull the top two eyeballs, remove the centre console, and unscrew two mounts that were bolted to the metal frame of the dash.

Interesting, is it an import? Mine is a standard DIN cage arrangement, but it is a UK car.

Yup, JDM '94 car. The stereo was two seperate single din alpine units - but rather than sliding into a cage, they were both bolted to two L brackets, which in turn were bolted to the dash structure. Quite well done, jsut a little more tricky to remove.

I've always found the DIN cage setup pretty rubbish, they seem very flimsy and don't offer the head unit much support unless the rear mounting point is used, which it rarely is.

Cheers, just had another look at the car and this is the set up...so its time to dismantle the car tomorrow morning, any hints/tips??

This is actually very easy, and uses external labour free of charge.

Simply leave MX5 with faceplate etc. still in place in one of the more shady areas of your town. So as not to cause additional painful expense (trickier given the current weather) leave the hood down so as to avoid any tearful stanley knife entries.

Leave for an hour - et voila! CD player painlessly removed...

Undo all the screws holding the armrest/ashtray/gearlever console in place and remove it.

Get yourself some speaker wire or a shoelace.

Kink it about 4 inches from the end so it bends back on itself.

Shove the kink through the eyeball vents and pull back through so you have in effect a wire going into the vent and back out again.

Tug like a bd on both ends of this wire/shoelace until the vent pops out. Repeat for 2nd vent.

Then you can unscrew the centre console screws hidden behind the vents.

Then undo the other screws holding the console in.

The rest is fairly obvious... I think!! If I remember rightly anyway!
