Thats the sound I got from my car last night on a blast up the road.... Well slowed down when I heard it!

It seemed to be coming from just behind the dash just left of the transmission tunnel. It happened when the car was revved above about 3,000rpm. Dipped the clutch took it out of gear and the let the revs drop and it went. Revved the car and when it went up to about 3,000rpm... there it was again. It slowly cleared and when I got home wasn't doing it at all!!

I personally think its an air lock in my water system as sounded just like my heating system in my house.

Any ideas people???

See this thread and, I'm sure, many others.

.....and be aware, coolant airlocks can result in big engine bills.

My car is not over heating and is running quite cool and has done since I've had it even in the hot summer. In the summer the fans cut in and out at about 90 which, on reading here, I believe is 'normal'.

I'm wondering if the reading I got last night was a correct one as it was just below 60. Can you get a false reading from an airlock?

Does the bible tell me how to bleed my system as mechanic I aint!?! And what coolant do I use? Mix and all the other stuff I need to know.

If you lose a vast amount of coolant, the sensor can be suspended in air. This is generally a bad thing and indicates that you either had a sudden coolant leak or you haven't checked the coolant level for some time (in which case you get no sympathy).

Bible describes how to bleed the system. It isn't difficult, but does lead to a lot of coolant spilling all over the place. Easier with two people .. one pouring liquid into the swirl pot, while the other mans the bleed screw on the radiator.

I chose to supplement the 'bible' method. When the swirl pot is full I blocked the filling hole with my finger and squeezed the pipe to the thermostat housing. This is higher than the swirl pot so still contains air. Repeatedly doing this resulted in me putting another 1/2ltr in. May as well get as much air out as possible.

I had a look last night and tried all of the methods in the bible plus the other one suggested and got about 1L of coolant/water mix in.

Was I low on coolant?

I measured my 'normal' temps and the fans cut in and out and the heater got very hot when I went for a drive up the road.

Going to have another check tonight to see if the level has changed.
