How old is he? And what does he want to use it for?
We have a load for use with our kids at school. They use them from the age of 5 up to 9/10 year old.
They're very simple, but also fairly limited too. The software has some basic effects and allows for stop-motion animation.

I doubt anyone has one because your son wants one for christmas.

If they do have one, it would have been bought for other reasons than that.

I take my rofl back. It seems there is a thing called a Digital Blue Movie Creator'!

What were they thinking when they came up with the name eek and does this mean the next generation will be even more camera happy?

It'll be absolutely fine for that - our Y5 kids (9/10) did that sort of stuff using the Lego Star Wars and Harry Potter characters. The results were surprisingly good.
