Evening PH collective,

A couple of days back I brought Race Driver: Grid, it quite a good game apart from the fact that it feels somewhat more of an arcade game rather a simulator. Would I be right in saying that Grid was the follow on from Toca Race Driver 3? If so, why has the simulation changed?

On my Xbox360 I also Forza 2, in my opinion although the graphics are to a high standard it has the downfall of the damage realism. Overall, it is the better game but doesn't offer the same sort of motorsports to race in unlike Race Driver. There is skill involved in Forza to get quicker and quicker times on the time trial mode and to have competitive racing where you need to brake instead of bringing up smoke like you see on Grid.

Another game that comes to mind is the Toca racing series, it was a very well contructed game that involved the user to have the skill to drive the car to provide the top lap times and to win the races. It also offered many different types of motorsports where you could put your skills to test, okay the game is a getting old now but even if you compare it with Grid its miles better. Although, the damage doesn't meet the same standard and the graphics aren't as good you could adjust the car settings to your need, you can't even change them on Grid.

As well as the Toca series, theres the new GT5 prologue. From the reviews of the game it seems defintely worth a buy and from what i've been told the handling of the cars and realism are immense. One of my mates has this game and reckon its miles Grid, and from what he's said I reckon he's right, mainly because the game is more real than Grid in many aspects. GT5 may not becoming out until 2009/10 but I've got a feeling that its going to make the 'motorsport' games like Grid look out of touch.

What game would you recommend me that has a real driving simulation but with motrsports such as WTCC and GT cars?

Cheers
PR

I swapped GT5P for Grid. GT5P is more realistic apart from the lack of damage but really is like watching paint dry.... To get a good time you have to draught this car on this bend otherwise forget it etc. The online part of GT5 is terrible. For instance if you get t-boned then there is a good chance you will get a time penalty for not doing anything wrong rolleyes

Grid isn't hugely realistic but I found it much more fun than GT5.

See the theme??!

wink

If you dont own a PC then I guess Forza is really your best bet at the moment.

Simbin/Atari are doing a xbox port of GTR (I think?) early next year. That might be worth a look but again you need a wheel to get the best out of it. Its called Race Pro

Demo before Xmas hopefully.

The Race Driver series hasn't been realistic since the days of TOCA 2, so there's no massive departure here.

I have Grid for both PS3 and PC and I really can't get in to it on either format. I really don't like the physics engine and the way the cars react, far to 'arcadey'.

GT5P is still tops in my book, for realism and physics it'as hard to beat and the online collisions have been updated and it's much less frustrating now, and not long to go til the full game is released. The manager of the local GAME told me it would be March `09.

For PC driving games the ultimate for realism has to be GTR Evolution. But be warned, you really do need a good wheel setup. Online is fantastic and it's giving me my Nurburgrin fix til GT5 is released.

You need to try iRacing. GTR is great, but not quite there.
