VDO Fuel tank sender

Guys - having a few problems with a VDO fuel tank sender. When connected up the gauge only reads about 1/4 full. The gauge works fine as when the 2 sender wires are crossed it reads full and drops back down to zero fine. I have tried swapping the sender over and checking the wires. The float in the sender tube appears to move OK - any ideas as it is driving me nuts!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

Silly question, but is the gauge the right one to suit the sender? i think VDO have several options of gauge to suit different types of sender (ie, tube or lever)

If you're using the standard senders that Ultima provided the fix is simple. Remove the senders from the tank. There is a very little pin in the side of the tube that holds the fragile sender in place during shipping. Reinstall the sender and you'll get the right reading.

hahahahaha. Steve's right. I had the same question many months ago and he provided great advice that sounded a lot like the advice I gave above.

I have this problem too. Not using the Ultima gauges but it would seem that the Ultima dip tube I have does not suit my VDO guage. Yep, there are lots of different resistance and length ranges for the VDO dip tubes. The Ultima one seems to be about 72 Ohms empty to about 25 Ohms full..ie resistance drops as fuel level rises..

My off the shelf VDO gauge however seems to be expecting resistance to rise as fuel level rises!? Weird!

Yes I have removed the pins from the sender!

Thanks guys - the sender was originally in the left hand tank and I moved it to the right (I only run a single tank as the car is 100% track based and avoids all the issues with trying to balance tanks with cornering forces etc etc) - it always worked fine in the left tank??? If it doesn't sort itself I may go for the stack option. Cheers
