Discussion
We currently have a teenager, who is always complaining that his friends get more money than he does.
what is the average weekly spend for going out etc. has to include bus fare as his friends live a bus journey away.
how many phers have 16 year old and on average how much to you give them pocket money each week.

At 16 I had a job and was getting 10 pounds a month.
My brother gets about 20 quid a month, or did until he wanted a contract phone, so my Mum arranged one that was 20 quid a month and she pays that. He's 17, nearly 18, but was on said 20 quid from 16 onwards. He has also had a job since he was 16.

It has been a few years since my son was that age but at that time (about 8 years ago) he gor £30 a month, of which £12 was diner money. I am guessing he went hungry and spent the rest on games for his play station.
Neighbours 14 year old get £30 a month, but she pays for all his clothes, trips out etc and that money is his for mags, sweets etc.

When I was 16 I had 6 pounds a month, which I didn't need to do anything with - I bought a Playstation game twice a year.
She kept hold of £60 per month to buy me clothes etc, and whenever I wanted to go out she would give me however much I wanted, so long as I didn't blow the 60 quid barrier in a month. Any extra from the month was put into a savings thing for me, to help start paying for uni.

I didnt get any pocket money when I was 16. This was circa 1984. When I realised I had "important stuff to buy", i spoke to a few dozen neighbours about washing their cars on a regular basis. I undercut the supermarket car washes and was very quickly washing 7 cars every sunday, I`d then have enough cash to buy anything I was after the following saturday. Job done.
At 16 my parents told me I was now old enough to leave school and so if I wanted to stay on at school I would have to pay a contribution to my school fees. I also had to start paying some rent contribution for living at home as long as I was earning an income (whether government student allowance or from working).
I can't say I was thrilled at the prospect but now I can recognise it probably helped me out a lot in the long term, although I have to say my parents didn't particularly mean it that way, they simply couldn't afford otherwise at the time. Looking at those other kids at school who were more indulged by their parents, they are the same ones now who are up to their necks in epic amounts of debt with no concept of budgeting while myself and a few others who I know also were in similar positions to myself are doing quite well now.
Good luck convincing your teenager it's a good idea though

.I'm 18 and haven't been getting any money from my parents since I was about 14. I've had a job for 4 years, as the only source of my income. Now I have to pay for petrol, £25 a week ish, to get to my university foundation course every day, they give me a £10 a week drip- just so my WHOLE weekly income doesn't go on petrol.
