I read an article this morning that stated that black women now earn more, on average, than white women for the first time in recorded history. Now, am I completely out of touch and missing the point for thinking "why the fk is this news". Race isn't supposed to be an issue, yet ethnic/minority pressure groups/lobbyists and the like all seem to want to ram it down our throats? Why?

It really is non-news.

I guess it is calculated by the even more annoying equal opportunities forms required to work at a big company, so they can be equal they must monitor ethnicity of future employees.

I don't believe anyones skin colour should have anything to do if they get employed or not.

Simply because it is not in the interests of the ethnic / minority pressure groups / lobbyists and the like for racism to go away.

I think it's great news - it opens the door for loads of white women to have their turn at playing the race card.

Don't you just love the equal opportunities monitoring bks. How can anything be based on non-discrimination if you need to monitor ethnic details all the time? The forms, by their very nature, actually cause discrimination. Load of st if you ask me!

Does no one think that it's just nice to know that we live in a society where equality is becoming the norm?

I think it is worth reading these stories as it shows that things are changing.

People have short memories, it was only 20 odd years ago that Mr Mosley was still organising marches.

I think it's good to hear this stuff.

Spot on, go to just about any London Borough council support offices, you will see many in these positively discriminated 'special' jobs paying themselves large amounts of tax payers hard earned.

But equality is NOT becoming the norm. If it was, why would huge organisations like the Metropolitan Police specifically reject applicants from white people? We are simply swinging in the other direction. Favouring a minority, which is patently the case a lot of the time, is not equality.

the article went on the say that the main reason for the findings was that half of all black women in the uk live/work in london - therefore higher salaried.

Some of the offices in Brent are 100% ethnic, positively evened up a bit too much. IMHO.

I live in Lambeth and the offices in Brixton do not have a single white person working in them, at the front parts at least!

Equality? Since when does one ethnic group earning more than another make equality?

I'm sure the report's bias.

I'm almost 90% sure it's also untrue.

I just think that people still need to be reminded that we do still live in a very white-bias society. Maybe Brent council does have a lot of black staff. Never heard any of you lot on your high horses complaining about literally everyone in parliament being white...

Just from your responses we can tell that black-people being over represent is an issue, but white over representation isn't.

That's all my point is.

Why measure it in black/white? Why not in height? Or weight? I want to see the stats for whether tall people are being discriminated against!

I was unaware of that discrimination of tall and or fat people was ever an issue. Must have missed the riots about that...

Whereas race is an issue.

Can we not have childish responses please?

What the discrimination laws should do is give everyone the same opportunities regardless of race, sex, age etc. What they should not attempt to do is set some quota for employment by race/sex/age. If people don't make the most of opportunities they've had equal access to then that's not a racial/sexist/ageist issue.

Your example of MPs in Parliament (although there are non-white MPs, not that it matters as long as they are good at what they do) - anyone has the opportunity to become an MP, they will probably have to join a major political party, gain a nomination, then get elected. How many non-whites attempt to take that opportunity? How many just complain about the lack of non-whites in Parliament?

From the US election coverage I've heard more about Obama's half-white, half-black background (and, strangely, mostly the Kenyan background, not the USA background - why is that?) than I have about his policies - why is it SO important to people? It's an interesting sidebar at most, not the biggest thing about that election. I know his grandmother still lives in Kenya, but not what he's planning for his first actions in charge! While people (the media in the most part or course) still make such a big deal out of background rather than competence and actions, racial tensions will always be present. Someone's background shouldn't even get a mention.

yes

People from under-priveleged backgrounds moan that MP's are out of touch with their needs. Yet these are, for the most part, the same people who moan their aren't black/ethnic/poor people in the UK Govt. But what would these people be able to offer for the middle and upper classes apart from sky-high taxes. I am not a racist person, nor do I look down my nose at people from lower socio-economic groups but I do think that nowadays poorer and also ethnic groups look upon people who work hard to buy the things they want with scorn. Which is what causes these tensions and these non-stories to surface. It's probably my fault for buying a Mail this morning as there were no Metro's left hehe
