Anyone know a part number for the UJ for the larger driveshafts as per the 400 ? Preferably a hardy spicer one

Think it may be the HS163, but not sure if this is for the 350 or 400
cap size of the HS163 is 23.80mm and length is 61.30

Now there's 3 numbers !!

HS163 23.8 x 61.30 - from wedgepages

HS166 27.0 x 81.80

HS179 30.2 x 106.33

At a guess I'd say mine were HS166 size, but will have to measure them later

Well I was wrong I have the large HS179 at 30.2 x 106.33,

So hopefully heavy duty enough to cope with my extra horsies when I find them smile

Make sure you get them with nipples!!! You'll be doing them again in 6 months otherwise.

disgusting...

Yep, GKN Hardy Spicer HS179. Not worth buying anything other than the GKN Hardy Spicer.

Now thats strange as there website says they are weartherproof, so why would you need to pump more grease in

Probably shou;d have done that to the last lot over the years smile

They lie. Water gets in there, usually in the outboard ones, and then the needle pins start to corrode. You keep pumping the grease in to (a) repel the water (yes sometimes I've squidged out water then grease) and (b) to push out 'used' grease with fresh stuff.

I've had the larger ones on the 350i now for 30k maybe 40k miles with no problems, but grease them regularly with moly grease.

I use Castrol LM (lithium) grease and hope to grease them more frequently when the garage is finished! I have read that the inboard joints get hot (from the disks) and the grease melts out leaving the needles dry.
When I had my Ujs upgraded by Proptech, Martin mentioned a more expensive sealed type of UJ, but I just opted for the nippled ones. I asked him to orientate the nipples so they were on the same side to make my life easier which was a nice touch.

Anyone know what donor car the splined end of the drive shaft is as looking at mine I can see why it was awkward to get the nut off - some of the threads are knackered

Is it from a Jag S / XJ or the Granada or knowing my luck a TVR special frown

That was going to be my cowboy approach, and copy the previous person that must also have done that smile

The driveshaft assembly is a TVR special. I think the spline is Granada as it's the mating part to the 5 stud Granada hub. I don't think they are easily available though.
