what is most people doing for insurance while there build is going on? if you insure it as a kit but it isn't finished can they still pay out if it gets stolen from a garage which you sent it to?
does insurance policys cover a car while its being built?

I had build up insurance with MSM. Then insured it on it's VIN Number for the drive to SVA and the DVLA. Then insured it with them ever since... (largely due to crap service from other insurers on my previous kitcar)

If you are sending it to a garage to get them to build it, then it should be covered under their policy whilst your car (or collection of bits) is under their custody and control.

If you are building it youself at a remote location away from your home, then it would be easiest to get build up cover from any of the specialist insurers. Note that they will want to know about the security of the garage you are using.

If you are building it at home, then depending on your insurance company (if it uses an offshore call centre this might be difficult) but whilst it is a collection of bits it isn't actually a car. Therefore provided the values of 'contents with the garage' can be changed to allow for your parts, then cover should be possible under your contents policy. Note that as soon as it 'becomes' a car, then you will be very unlikely to have any cover under contents.

Excellent - I hadn't thought of it this way.
The only problem is we're building our car at my parent's house so it would be on their insurance, even though it is not their property... Hmm, will probably get build cover anyway... any contact details / web sites for any of the above?

Just get laid-up cover - Adrian Flux do it and its not much - £100 or so depending on a few variables! And then this can obviously we swapped over for a full policy when built.

After reading "andy-xr" comment about footman james, I rang up for a quote. £61 to cover my little project, I was goint to wait till it was road worthy to insure it. But as it stands me at £8000 in parts and its now rolling (so easy to roll on a trailer) for £61 its a bargain.

Just out of interest I asked for a comprehensive quote 4500 miles and it came out at £280.

I used Footman James build-cover (and subsequent road cover) and they have always been incredibly helpful and very sensibly priced.

A warning about Adrian Flux. I had my project insured with them but when I temporarily moved the car out of my garage to another address to have some work done and I informed them of this, they immediately cancelled the insurance with no refund of premium.

Seems very unlike Flux, they usually want to charge you if they have to do something smile
