My 7 year old daughter has just started playing at school. Strange, but she has to bring the violin home with her. it seems a bit risky, for a bunch of young kids to be carrying delicate instruments to and fro, but it might be to build some sense of responsibility in them.

Or the school has so storage space. scratchchin

KH, lessons are only a tiny part of it. Your daughter needs to take her viollin home so that she can do some practice every day. Playing once a week in the lesson isn't going to yield much progress; she needs to be practising to get better at the new stuff she's learned in the lesson. at that age you will have to encourage her to practice regularly. Her teacher should be setting herclearly defined tasks. please don't make the common mistake of assuming that 1 lesson a week is all it takes! the rewards are well worth the effort though.

Would you want to leave it at the school to get nicked?

My girlfriend used to play cello, carried that about with her!

I got to Grade 3 on the Tuba when I was 14. Decided to stop playing the end as driving took over more of my spare time. Especially as getting the Tuba home on the Train and then the 2 mile walk home was quite difficult... Thankfully it had wheels!!

I passed my grade 5 then spectacularly failed my theory test, last picked it up for my AS level music when I was 17. I was actually very able and had a good ear but my sight reading was awful.

I still have my beautiful violin, which I was left in a will.

I too played the trumpet and used to carry it home with me.
I used to get it out on the bus and give it a quick parp to scare the bejeesus out of the driver and unsuspecting OAP's music

Wife used to play.

She gradually stopped practising.

Which was an enormous relief.

Played until Grade 6 at school but soon realised it wasn't exactly 'fashionable' to play the violin LOL

If you'd conducted yourself properly, you wouldn't have had problems with your crotchet.

Violin, passed grade 5 but don't think I could progress further without the theory, I had the Grade 6 sheet music and learned it but was hopeless with the theory so stopped. I've inherited a couple of violins and do take them out now and again to keep the skill up.

I am currently writing parts for a 44 piece string section (20 violins) - but I wouldn't know which end to blow down myself.

Starting learning to play the violin at Junior School, wasn't allowed to take Grade 1, for some reason I had to go straight to Grade 2. Gave it up not long after that, I'm sure my parents were relieved.

Taught myself to play piano (albeit badly) and had singing lessons until the age of 18.

Now married to a professional Tuba player and my 5 year old son plays the cornet.

It's very noisy in our house...
