Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else had problems with their CV8 gearbox. Vaxhall have replaced two gearboxes under warranty in my car. The second replacement was because the technicians thought the new gearbox they had put in was worse than the one they had just taken out! Now some 200 miles later this one is whining in second and third but the Vauxhall Monaro technician from Luton says it is normal for the vehicle. Well I was wondering if they all whine in second and third or if it is as I suspect VX trying to get out of a warranty issue.

Mine was replaced for whining.
Maybe you should suggest they replace with one of the new TR6060 beefier LS3 units smile

I had two CV8s and neither of them whined in any gear. The only common noise as far as I'm aware is that grinding noise when pulling at low revs which disappears as the revs rise. I've driven a few Monaros and they all made that noise when hot. Personally I think the T56 is sh**e and would be better off in a tractor. There have been loads of issues with them on here.

I think you need to cut the old T56 some slack. In the USA at least it is quite cheap and a lowish volume alternative to more common autos. My MM6 variant gave no trouble in 24K and I think the shift quality is reasonable in a chunky manly kind of way. Just the gear lever buzz annoys. The M12 variant I fitted (better ratios)has been fine to for the 12K so far touch wood.

If you have had it changed under warrantee for just noise then consider your self lucky given Vauxhall's list it at £7K. And if you didn't get them to fit the M12 instead of another MM6 then you are an idiot. Always puzzles me why they seam to fix engine problems but swap gearboxes. I guess they know how over priced it is.

I'd done over 60,000 miles on the T56 in my old, dearly departed, Pontiac Trans Am f-body. All I ever had was a bit of buzzing from the rip shifter. All gears and synchos good as gold.

My cv8 did 50k with no issues untill the "high speed" (as its called) gear change which bust my box. hopefully now its repaired all will be well forever!
Yes I get the mechanical whirring at low revs, but nothing else and no vibration.
The T56 box is Cr@p - sorry Granadaman but it is. What other "sports car" marque would put up with boxes breaking all over the place? even aston martin use a beefed up version for not alot more HP passing thru it.

Perhaps Stevie deserves some slack. He was probably totally in the hands of the dealer and has never heard of M12s or MM6s hardly idiot material.

Poor choice of words but it is a situation where you could win so much and nobody looses.

Just out of interest what are all classifying as a gearbox failure? Does it just get noisey or does it go bang and leave you stranded?

Big time crunching on fast gearshifts, plus shift into 3rd coast down and large low fequency vibrations shake the car, pretty violent at times.

Think a few were replaced under warrenty for selector failure too (including mine)... 6th was not obtainable, and 5th would go in, but just pop out again. I'd call that a failure, though I can imagine how annoying a whine would be... the wife Mk1 was one of those. Now I upgraded to a newer model, the Mk2 is not so bad
