no you dont "need" one ...but it will make it sound even louder and deeper on full throttle, and maybe give a couple of bhp

Have a look at car builder solutions, they have a box for £40 and comes with ducting and they do some nice inlet trumpets, could get it all done for £60 ish, the difference between the pricey ones and this in performance would be next to nothing and spend the change on some brake pads.

If you value your hearing then be careful with some of the cone-filter-in-a-box jobs that are too close to the bulkhead, they can resonate so f
king badly that you *need* to wear earplugs or you'll have to crawl out of the car with your ears bleeding.
With an S1 you can drown out the exhaust note with the induction as it's closer to you and can set up resonance in the tub, and IMO the induction blare of a K series is viciously unpleasant compared to a nice zorst on the same engine.
Be careful you don't just get a painful wall of noise and no discernible power gain (or worse, power loss). Make sure you're ducting cool air to the new filter or you'll just scoop hot air out of the engine bay and go slower...

Not true.S1 with CAT sounds like a sewing machine.
My car with De-CAT, Janspeed and induction sound pretty composed at low speed / cruising but sounds like a "real" sports car when you give it the beans!
Just how it should sound and totally suits the car.
To me, an exhaust only sounds chavy when it's out of place. i.e a nova sounding like an Enzo would sound chavy.

It's not to do with the cat. I have my cat back now and it still sounds great at high revs without the airbox, but with the original airbox sounded like you said. I have tried all 4 combinations (Cat(With/Without), Airbox(With/Without), and have just the K&N filter "induction" (and the VVC engine if that makes a difference).
just one small thing to remember before splashing out ...its a 1.8 4 pot Rover K series or Toyta engine ...commonly found in shopping cars.

A friend is going back to a standard airbox as he is really suffering the noise and makes it pretty much impossible to speak in the car and believes he going deaf now...........FB said:

Yep, I just have a standard K&N panel in my 111's and the sports exhaust.Doesn't feel any different to the clean filter it replaced and no real noisier.I notice that Raceline do a 'modded' airbox, so might look at taking mine out and making some logical adjustments to get more cold air in and change the concertina hose on the box to TB to a smooth silicon one.

I had a sports cat on my K engine and then Honda later one, more expensive than a decat pipe of course, but no hassle every year, similar power gain, a bit more noise but not too muchFB

after 6 years in an Elise, 83K miles, 2 engines and 5 exhausts, I ended up with a big back box, designed to keep a 330bhp Honda quiet at 8000revs, but still not restrictive plus a sports cat ...was the best it ever was...low noise at idle and near factory when cruising, but a nice howl on full throttle
