My line manager has just given me details to a new gym that is opening in Guildford soon for £14.99 a month. Now on going to the website, it doesn't look great and almost scream scam at me, no joining fee, no contract and a low price? Too good to be true?

The link for it is http://www.thegymgroup.com

Not a plug, just curious if anyone has used the Hounslow (hehe) branch and if it's actually any good?

Not a scam, just a realistic price for a cheap gym with tons of members in a difficult economic time.

Folks like Virgin and Esporta who are asking north of £80 a month, plus 3 or 12mth contracts are going to get hit hard IMO.

The only problem with joining a 'cheaper' gym, is that it soon fills with Eastern European 'meatheads' who train loudly in groups and hog the equipment.

Virgin gyms are only £50, unless you look at Central London prices.

They have infiltrated my David Lloyd's, I would mind but, their birds are hotter, and they are stronger hehe

I pay £10/year biggrin

Go to the local college, sign up for some bks course (which is about £20), get a gym card, then quit the course. Or even better, continue with the course.

I'm doing a one year business course to get into uni, and to be honest bks is the best way to describe it.

I know what you're saying, how is it that so many of the E Europeans are meatheads? Guess they've evolved to cope with a harder life than us?

Have been going on and off to the Hounslow Branch since it opened. The 'Gym Group' was offering £10/month membership if customers enroled ~ 4 months 'off plan' to opening after which it would be £14.99p once open (yes it did seem like a scam where they'd take your deposit money and things wouldn't materialise... but it did!)
All in all good value for money if machines and loose weights are your forte. It can get quite busy during peak hours and the air-con is appauling. Initially equipment levels were poor, but they have recently added more to their portfolio. It does also does attract people of varying socio-economic background due to its competitive and v. reasonable pricing strategy (though you still get some 'non-members' using the pin numbers of associated members!).
I'd only recommend you joining if a good, quick cheap workout is required without the need for other ammenities (ie; such as food, classes, entertainment, creches, saunas, swimming and other sports).
Goodluck as you'll need it if comparing it to more premier established places, but ignorance can be bliss (and less costly)smile
