The Little Bandit roars again...
Discussion
Hi folks,
Just thought I'd let you know that the Little Bandit is all Top Banana again. For those of you that get Sprint, it is the metallic grey s3c in the GOTG pictures last month (By the way, does anyone know if you can get back issues, 'cos I have lost my copy of that issue..Doh!).
Anyway, shortly after those piccys were taken, she died whilst flying across the Mendips.
Initial diagnosis seemed to point to the coil or the ignition module, and after a bit of research, it became clear that the wrong coil was fitted, so that was replaced with a standard Granada one. I also replaced the ignition module aswell, although it transpires that was probably unneccesary, but at least it's something I don't have to replace in the future!
The LB was fired up and all semed OK, but the tickover was really fast, and remained so, even after a run and she was warm. There had been a new noise developing and that was traced to a crack in the exhaust manifold just before the lambda sensors.
This explained the fast tickover and maybe the coil failing from excessive under bonnet heat. All I had to do was take the manifold off and have it welded up, which I did, but leaving 3 bolts sheared off in the head....which meant all I had to do was take the head off to have the bolts drilled out and helicoils fitted!
The work is now complete, and the LB has never run better..Hoorah!
Whilst it was all a bit of an effort for a smallish problem, I did discover several small faults along the way, and now these are all fixed they have made a big difference.
By the way, on the subject of noise, the LB is the dog's, just ask silverback mike, or anyone down at Le Mans, Sunday night Houx Annexe roundabout...
P.S. on the subject of s3 or s3c, for info, the LB has hydraulic tappets and a LSD. TTFN
