track toy choses?

im looking to build a little track toy, i was looking at a 205 gti 1.9, but also thinking about mk2 fiesta xr2 or a polo couple mk3.
Power doesnt mater fully, as engine builds or swaps possible and, you dont need a massive enigne to have fun!
Main thinks that im thinking of is, handling, cost of replacment parts ie pannels, cost of parts to get to a good standerd ie cage, suspension....
i know my way abit around fords and vw's and learning french at mo.
Main piont to this post is to find out what people think to the choses iv picked and any others i may have forgoten..
Any help and advice would be greatful

A 205 gti isn't a bad place to start. They can be made very quick with various 309 parts and the Mi16 motor (citroen BX version) is easy to get 220hp from. You can do a *lot* to these cars for £5k total budget.

We developed a 205 GTI from a road car to a trackday car over an eight year period.
The car has just sold and we figured that we spent about £3,500 on developing it including the purchase of the car in the 1st place.
We didn't go mad on the engine side of things but concentrated on the handling and brakes as well as doing the normal strip out, cage, harnesses etc on the interior.
We could have easily spent more developing the engine but didn't see the point other than some minor stuff like competition hoses etc.
The car sold for about £1,700 which over an eight year period isn't a bad level of depreciation tbh.
Although we enjoyed developing the car on reflection we would have taken one of two different routes:
1. Developed the car in such a way that it was elgible to be sold on for a relevant race or rally series.
2. Bought an ex stock hatch car or similar.
The reason i put number 2 was that although some of the cars are a bit scruffy and thrashed to death all the hard work has been done and the cars are track ready. One of the biggest suprises to us when we started was how unsuited road cars were /are for serious track work!!
I've noticed on the club motorsport forum that the hot hatch championship isn't going to happen next year so i can only assume there will be a fair amount of cars coming available from that.
If you have the room and budget to trailer a car then i would highly recommend this as an option.
Buy a Brian James minno and you don't really lose any money on them at re-sale time tbh.
If the budget is slightly higher (around the £5k to £6K mark) i think the race prepped MG ZR160's look great value and all the hard work has been done.
The other one that is worth considering if you fancy some RWD is a Max 5 championship car.

Ive just bought a Clio 172 track prepared it,picked most of it second hand off ebay,ie cage,seats,harnesses,etc the whole car stands me at less than £2500,not the fastest thing on the track,but a lot of fun.It had its 1st outing at Cadwell on Sunday,and never miss a beat all day,very pleased with it.

if you know you way around fords i would stick to the blue oval. sure its tempting to try somehting new but why make things hard for yourself? i would be looking for a mk1 xr2 and a 1700 xflow from someone with a westfield looking to upgrade. 160 bhp fairly easily and go kart like handling. should embarrass a few things on a track day....
