For the last few days I have been unable to login into pistonheads. While not logged in I have clicked on "reply to topic" at which point it would ask me to login, so I did so and then there is the link to "return" and when I clicked on that it would just ask me to login again. Also just before I managed to log in I came onto the forum and it said "welcome back Greenie".
Not sure what was going on and why I am now logged in but thought somebody might like to know about it.

This sounds like the cookies on the computer are doing weird things and can't read them properly at times. If it does happen again it probably is worth deleting the cookie for PH and logging in again.

More details about cookies here:

I've just had exactly the same problem and can only seem to log in using IE and not Firefox.

Yes I have cleared my cookies! wink

The problem with the welcome back message is due to the caching solution we have in place and we are still trying to find a fix for it.

It has been discussed here before but the general gist is that a computer further down the line sends back somebody else version of the page, rather than talking to the PH servers to get your version. You are not logged in as the other person, so there is no security risk and as you have no doubt found out, refreshing or going to another page fixes it.

We are doing our best to find out exactly what is causing but as it is not happening on our servers it is proving extremely tricky to diagnose.
