Is Kraut an offensive word?

I work with a German lady, she calls me an insel affen(island monkey) and I call her a Kraut. Theres no malice involved, its just harmless banter.
I also get to use the "you started it" "no I didnt" "yes you did, you invaded poland" line when having a mock argument, and she always falls for it

Also from that link I just learnt:
During the Hundred Years War the French took to calling the English les goddams because of their frequent use of expletives.
