Hi, I need some advice on my engine problem. I am running a redtop with twin 40 weber carbs. I am now on my second engine as the first one died. With the first engine on the same set up it ran fine for the first 2-3 thousand miles, then it started smoking from the crank case breather and had a massive amount of back pressure, then it died. Now i have changed the engine, however it is having the same problem but has only been driven in and out of the workshop. Everyone has said that it has washed the bores as the carbs are not jetted right. Does anyone know what jets are recommended for my engine and if so could they let me know as i really don't want to change the engine again just yet. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks

Take. To. Rolling. Road.

Seriously cost to set original engine up circa £200 max.

Cost to keep replacing engines + hassle?

could be too late if you have got to the point of excessive crankcase pressure etc. On a badly set up set of carbs, you can destroy an engine in 500 miles. You may have to start again.I would put 45's on a redtop as it would be a better size for one of those.

As mentioned, 40's are definitely too small for a 20XE. You will be throwing away power.

Excessive fuelling will cause bore wash and the resulting wear will cause heavy breathing and lost performance. However, there is no way this would have happened in the time it takes to drive into and out of the workshop. Did you give the new engine a compression check when you got it to check for wear? Most of these engines now have well over 100k miles on them.

Do you have the crankcase and cam cover breather system correctly set up?
