Where to see & go in New York

spending a week in New York just before Xmas and looking for some ideas on where to go and what to see to get the best of my 7 days..

already booked a helicopter ride and a ice hockey game...

managed to get £1000 worth of dollars before the rate went titties up so I have some funds already saved

Flatbush, East Flatbush, Canarsie, Eastern Queens and Far Rockaway are all lovely - make sure you take all your cash out with you.

I'll have to get a carrier bag though if I'm going to carry all that money as my pockets will be full with my dslr and ipod's

Sounds like you want to visit www.jr.com

Brunch at "Friend of a farmer" is a must. Arrive early, or be prepared to queue.

Empire State at night has wonderful views.

Circle line tours do a round manhattan boat trip, that's great to see.

Lombardis pizza on spring street is the best on the planet. Again be prepared to queue or turn up early.

you might realise that the 'arctic conditions' we're experiencing in the UK at the moment are nothing of the sort!

Walk from brooklyn (high street)back to Manhattan over Brooklyn bridge
South Street Seaport lunch
Wall Street
Staten Island Ferry - Free and great views of manhattan
Central park & Boathouse for drinks
Go outdoor ice skating (if cold enough)
Shopping in midtown - Macys, Bloomingdales, Madison Ave
Eat in revolving restaurant in times Square (Marriot Marquis)
Burger at Shake shack opposite Flatiron Building
Mulberry Street walk in Little Italy
Chinatown
Go for walk in Harlem/El Barrio (101st+), looks rough but the only place where people actually say 'Good morning', 'Hello'

Me and the GF went last summer (stayed with family in a suburb of NJ - saves ALOT of cash) Think your doing the right thing going to see some American sports we went to see the Yankees v Mets and it was such an enjoyable experience went by subway too which was fun/scary as we had to 'trot' through the Brox to get to Yankee Stadium! Also try and do all the touristy? things i.e. ES Building, Times Sq, Central Park, Battery Park etc.. and as said above shopping and Little Italy are a must also China Town Hope you have a good time.

Just had a weekend break in NY last week

• Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Centre) is a must. $20PP but you can get $2 off here http://www.newyorksmartsave.com/Top-of-the-Rock.ht...

Find out what time Sunset is and book around 20 minutes beforehand. We went around 1600 (Sunset 1630) and got to see the city in Daylight and watched the lights come on as it got dark!

• Broadway - Well worth going to see a show. Go to the TKTS booth in Times Square just in front of the Olive Garden (You can't miss it, it has illuminated red steps going up to the roof of the booth). You can get excellent discount on the tickets here (Between 30 and 50%). Avenue Q and Phantom of the Opera are excellent productions.

• Brooklyn Bridge - Catch a subway train out to High street and follow the directions to the bridge. Excellent views of manhatten/statue of liberty. Have a look on trip advisor for a pizza shop called "Grimaldi's" which is on the Brooklyn side. Amazing Pizza.

• Grand Central Station - Some excellent food outlet's and Juniors Cheesecake shop. The best cheesecake in the world! To die for.

• Ice Skating - Central Park and Rockefeller centre both have Ice Rinks though you have too pay for these. Bryant Park (round the back of the Public Library off 5th Ave) has a free Ice Rink and a Christmas Style Market.

• 5th Ave for all the shop fronts with the Christmas decorations.

• Macy's - If you go shopping here, go to the Information Desk (Ground Floor) and show your Passport/UK Driving License you get 11% Discount in store.

• Ellen's Stardust Diner, just off Broadway/51st St. Food is reasonable but they employ prospective Broadway singers/actors and they sing all the show tunes. Fantastic evening (The best time is apparently Sunday Evening) with a great atmosphere and they really can sing. Had a rendition of Phantom of the Opera.

• Times Square in an evening for the experience/atmosphere. The place is never quiet.

Have a rough plan that will let you go here and there as you want to, but all the usual tourist attractions that everyone says go and see are all worth seeing.

What I found was with the time difference I was up and out at 7am, Starbucks over the road for breakfast and off to the subway (which takes some getting used to)

There's that much to see and do that you're better planning it in areas, no point being at Central Park and then deciding you want to try the Statten Island Ferry

WHSmiths do a pocket tourist book which includes a subway map at the back that I found really useful.

And dont be shy with the camera, you'll get some brilliant phots just about anywhere, moreso at night (take a monopod for the ferry and hide it or buy one at Adorama)


ETA - all hotels are tiny, so if you can actually move your case around in the room you've got a good hotel

If you're going with your OH and are in Grand Central - On the lower level outside the Oyster Bar is a walkway with a tiled domed ceiling. It makes an excellent Whispering Gallery if you stand in opposite corners

Wouldn't go to GC JUST to do that, but if you're there - you can look cool and knowledgeable....

Hmmph, I went with the family six months ago. Queued for a half hour to get Statue of Liberty tickets, then queued for TWO MORE hours to get on the boat, then got told we couldn't actually go up the statue.

We stopped off at Ellis island, to hear all about the poor unlucky immigrants, who now own new York, but that got pretty old after a half hour walking about, and it was hot and sweaty inside.

We went to Central park, but it was blowing a gale, could hardly stand up in it.

Wife wanted to go to Times Square, but when we finally arrived we realised it is just a street, a road, nothing there but advertising and shops. What did I miss here?????
