Yes you can spend your way out of recession, but only if you adhered to the first part of Keynesian economic strategy... i.e. in the rich times, cut your spending, pay of your debts. And where are we getting this money to loan to Iceland, give to India etc?

Keynes advocated what has been called countercyclical fiscal policies, that is policies which acted against the tide of the business cycle: deficit spending when a nation's economy suffers from recession or when recovery is long-delayed and unemployment is persistently high—and the suppression of inflation in boom times by either increasing taxes or cutting back on government outlays

“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” Albert Einstein… And where are we getting this money to loan to Iceland, give to India etc?
And translated for the benefit of Gordon Brown: “Even more cheap borrowing won’t solve the problems that have been caused by too much cheap borrowing”.
