Hi,

I am thinking of going the route to build a canam and I wonder if anyone tried to use
a RS4 drive train including gear box. The first thing is that this is 4 wheel drive so I wonder if you
can just not use the rear wheel drive and use only the front wheel drveshafts ?
Not sure if the gear box can handle all the stress when you only use the front driveshafts ?
The next thing that is on my mind why not use all the sensors and displays and cabling from
a wrecked RS4 and put it in the ultima including the catalysators and what else is necessary to pass
the strict emission laws here in germany. This way you would not need to modify anything
on the ECUs or is my assumption to simple ?

ok thanks,

however called the seller of this RS4 drive train and learned that he also has a ls7 with corvete gear box,ECU and cats and is asking 14k
for the whole package. That might be interesting, what are the professional opinions ?
Is it possible to use the corvette z06 gearbox in the canam ?

thanks

With that type of gearbox you have to fit the engine in the front and you may end up with the first front engined Ultima nuts

go for the LS7 but maybe fit it in the back and use a G50 transaxle!!
the Z06 box will be no use so get him to sell that on.

lots of those been done, i am about to start a SBC replacement with a LS7.

Chris.
when I was investigating the RS4 -> mid engine route, I was told by several Audi experts not to use the 4wd box converted. TDI or any of the other 2WD variants were the top recommendations.

I'm doing the RS4 engine... what I've discovered so far (up to 2 months ago - somethings may have changed):

1) Forget about the RS4 Quattro box... it's been tried and has never really worked. Go for a 6-speed Audi 01X box (2wd TDi box).
2) Forget about using the Bosch Motronic ECU's as there are no readily available programmes to allow it to run outside an OEM RS4 vehicle. It can be done (apparently), but will cost a fortune! Go for an aftermarket ECU such as an Omex, DTA, Motec, etc.
3) Forget about trying to utilise the FSI ports / injectors (no aftermarket ECU can work them). Seal them up and fit throttle bodies.

Speak to these guys in Holland... http://kms.vankronenburg.nl/

They will sort you out with everything you need to get the engine going.

Audi V8 would be best suited in the Ultima IMO and is what Id do... but LS7 is thats tried and tested and will be better in resale value and an awsome street car with all that torque and power.. just IMO.

yes complete idiot here these cars all have shafts and RWD so these boxes will be unusuable, however I think that is too much of an adventure for me, so many thanks for the replies.
