Can anyone confirm if any late Range Rover ECU (3.9 onwards) will work in our cars, with a suitable chip or is there only one version that works properly. Current one is a 95 year code AMR2175 - car is 96 Griff 500. I am trying different chips and would like to have a second ECU.
I note that the equivalent year Discovery V8s have an ecu without the mounting tags. Parts number are totally different but will they work correctly?

AFAIK the Range Rover ECU didn't have a socket for the chip. The socket was fitted by TVR.

There are several of us who have fitted alternative ECU's and have the original 14CUX sitting around, myself included.

You might be better buying one of them.

When I was trying to fault find a V8s I borrowed a V* discovery ECU and there was no noticeable difference in the way it started, ran or warmed up. That was a 3.9 non cat engine. Would have thought it less likely that the 500 map would be the same as the range rover one.

Dont forget its the tune resistor that chooses the map, so if the ECU was from a Range Rover non cat, and your car was cat' the ECU would have run the Range Rover cat' map. Not ideal in a TVR !!

All? but the early pre-1990 3.5litre ECU's have the socket fitted, and even those will functionally work. If it says 14cux on the label it will almost certainly have a socketed chip in it. I have ecu's dated 1991,93,95 and 1996 taken from various land/range rovers all have similar socketed boards in them.

The 3.9 ECU itself should be OK, but you must change the fuel chip and tune resistor (if necessary) for the TVR one. Although TVR socketed all their ECUs, some RR ones have the chip soldered to the PCB. About 95 onwards, even RR ones are socketed.

Very early 14CUX ECUs (c1989) differ slightly and have a yellow 'jumper wire' on the PCB. I don't know if these will work or not.

Ive tried a TVR chip in an 89 ecu, it does basically work, but it had fueling flat spots. Not sure if this was a simply mismatch or faulty ECU however.
