Anyone done it? Any views on what its like apart from deeply hot and unpleasant? Think I'm going to need to head there to pay off the mortgage soon and wondering if I can handle the pain.

Is it a permanent traffic jam? etc

Any opinions would be welcome.

Also, there's work going in Riyadh too, which I can't see being much better.

Sounds very unpleasant.

Party they threw yesterday at the opening of a new hotel complex

How will you cope with that abject poverty?

It's more the heat, working conditions, hours, accomodation and traffic I am concerned with. I don't think I'd get invited to too many billionaire's parties.

They have air conditioning.

Traffic is bad, like any city (they have having a metro put in though IRRC). Finding accomadation, that's what gets you.

lmfao. Woe is me.

You'll struggle through the tough times I'm sure. I personally think its a great place to spend a few years whilst young.

Is accommodation difficult to find or just expensive?

Expensive and the years rent needs paying up front - fine if you are sponsored by your company but a bit of a pain otherwise.

I'm aware the money is good or wouldn't be doing it. But I've done the working overseas thing before (in my old firm's Moscow office for an evil bstard) and was so happy to come back to the UK, I need some vague assurance that I'm not going to be throwing myself into an even worse nightmare before I do it. However, given the lack of jobs here I'm running out of options. Admittedly, the only really bad thing about Moscow was my boss, everything else was pretty good.

Okay, you don't all have to mock. I'm convinced. Applications heading off now

Traffic is truly shocking, its worse than London at peak times.
Life can be cheap, but uninspiring. To enjoy life is not cheap, but weather is good and fine dining etc is v good, if a bit monotonous.

It very much depends what you do out there, how long hours you need to work and what you want from life. If you quite enjoy normal UK home life, like popping out to the shops, mowing the lawn, washing the car etc, Dubai is not for you for any longterm option, but 6 momths -12 months of tax free graft can set you up.
If you are single,l you can have fun (not in public though!!) and the place is crawling with gold diggers, seriously !! Watch yourself! if you have a family or missus etc, they will either l,ove the easy life or it will drive them bonkers!
Weather is mental IMO, just far too hot in the summer, i go out there with work and just gettign out the car to the hotel is beserk. Some get used to it, but most westerners i know there who like the sun pay the price with leathery skin, as it is so intense. Beach is nice in the evening, water very warm 35 degrees most evenings.
Locals are mainly immigrants, far more subservient than we are used to in UK, its not easy to cope with, I found it a bit embarrassing at times. My Phillipino chamber made was a qualified lawyer, who made more making beds in Dubai than plying her trade back home! It's humbling tbh, especially as you find they make about $150 a month! !
Mind you she was a fox and if it were not for the fact you get locked up for shggin outside marriage, (!) I am sure she could have earned a bit more through "extras!" I find a two week stint out there enough and am glad to get home, but then I am out there on UK taxed salary, so I dont have that incentive! I would do it for a year to get some cash, but I could not live there full time. It's too false.

just me

Life is what you make of it. I don't understand people who enjoy washing cars and mowing lawns...and I daresay the shops in Dubai are pretty good. Get out there, buy a boat or share in one, live close to work, work hard, play hard, save your money, and enjoy life. The world is your oyster.

I would second S3fella's comments. I worked out there for a while, whilst setting up offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It is not as great as it's made out, I couldn't wait to get home at the end.

I think you really need to do the sum's, I would want to be paid quite a bit more to work out there for a long stint. I really don't think you are paid a huge amount more over there now when you take into account rent etc and I wouldn't take the family unless your co are giving you a great deal
