Just a quick heads up for anyone heading East this morning, Scarborough is really snowy, the minute you get East of Rillington on the A64 it becomes quite thick, back roads are passable with care but it is still coming down. Malton on the other hand is dry and sunny!

Has anyone seen any today?

Clear run over to Barnsley today from Bradford - good to see the sun out for a short time.

Didn't venture further afield!

Myself and Matt drove over the A169 Whitby to Pickering road in a huge blizzard accompanied by 4 foot snowdrifts yesterday afternoon and back again on a combination of non-gritted ice and snow following an LWB VW van that had a few lairy tail out moments trying to put the power down on the Moors! Plenty of snow around that area yesterday, will post some photos when I get chance!

A few photos as promised from our 300 mile hoon around North Yorkshire including plenty of miles around Pickering, Whitby, Sandsend, Runswick and the area in blizzards and hailstorms thumbup

1. "The Route Less Travelled - a backroad off the main A169"

2. "The Main A169 between Pickering and Whitby - we'd beaten the gritters!"

3. "Plenty of time to stop and make snowmen!"

4. "Then we found this just round the corner, the result of a tight corner and not enough grip. Could have stopped with a worse view!"

5. "Robin Hoods Bay"

6. "A sign just in case we hadn't realised..."

7. "It was rather chilly out there!"

Chevy Veyron Warren - pure legendary terrible hire car treated with all respect due to hire cars of course. Between us (mainly Matt) it has done almost 1000 miles in 4 days!

Trouble seems to be that a whole generation has hardly driven in snow, whereas 20 years ago it was pretty regular. Thus either traffic moves at 10mph on an inch of (soft) snow, or someone stuffs it through inexperience.
I used to shove a bag of cement or similar in the boot on rear-wheel drive.
The classic little Minis were brilliant in snow, if you had plenty of tread on the fronts. cloud9

Only once ever stopped from getting to work...all over the northeast, sometimes in proper blizzards, and that was sheets of black ice right in Leeds city centre ! Just couldn't get up the hill on Huddersfield road, and being constantly threatened with t-boning by vehicles sliding down it. eek
Went home while I still had a car in one piece.

The other problem nowadays is that people buy "sporty models" of cars, especially hatches like golfs polos etc, that have wide tyres and little sidewall, and together with a slug of torque when the turbo in there tuned diesel comes on song they will have little chance of getting the power down in there little hatch.

Alot of people with these kind of fwd hatches have little smoothness on the peddle which isn't much of a problem in the dry, but in this whether it is. Nevermind the drivers of 4x4's who think they are invincible and immune to the snow and ice on roads and will blitz past anything like the roads were bone dry. That goes for other special drivers in hot hatches. They dont seem to consider that maybe everyone is cruising along at 40 whilst its snowing is because they don't have enough grip in the conditions to do 70. Maybe if they had winter tyres it would help as alot of tyres used over here are not really for -C temps.

Perhaps you should express yourself more clearly (or politely) when you post, then you wouldn't be mistaken for one of the many idiots who now seem to populate these forums. smile

Huge snow this morning when I commenced my 20 minute walk to work at 06:30. Pretty-much stopped by the time I reached work though and there’s now blue sky and lots of slush on the ground. If the slush remains and freezes overnight there’ll be fun ‘n’ games tomorrow hehe

Not much snow in Leeds, although some people seemed to think so by the way they were driving! rolleyes

Work car park was an (empty) ice rink though, which was good fun - except that the Alfa is FWD!

Remember those days well. The pug 205 derv were good at getting through the snow, not the fun of the mini but you could get to work or into the country for a bit of plastic bag sledging smile.

Hadn't left the end of the cul-de-sac and watched a Freelander slide down the hill, mount the kerb with an expensive thud and take out the street sign.
Ironic thing is that she also drove into the large yellow grit bin which sits at the end of the street.
It certainly stopped her sliding any further...

She was OK but her husband wasn't as impressed. I quietly walked by as he pointed out "all the other cars seem to be managing."
