Reducing rear axle whine.
Discussion
I have a 2WD Mazda Bongo which has developed a rear diff whine due to the previous owner not keeping a tab on the oil level...
I know that a repair is on the cards for the future, but since axles will keep on going for many a year, I was hoping to find some way of reducing the noise to delay the inevitable by a year or so.
I'm not expecting miracle cures - and I certainly ain't going to be chucking sawdust in there... - but I was hoping someone might have some possible solutions that could reduce the noise a bit (it isn't dreadful at the mo', just annoying).
The only thread I've found on here along this line had a reply by Jaguar Steve, and he suggested one of the ideas I was considering - using a thicker oil such as 85W-140 instead of the standard SAE 90.
I'm happy to try this, perhaps along with an additive. Dies anyone have any genuinely useful results from using an additive in this situation?
Any other ideas would also be welcome.
Thanks.

Thanks, all.
Yes, I know it's knackered! However, it is only 'just' knackered, and they will go on for ever even like this - although the noise would soon drive you nuts...
I'm looking to simply delay the inevitable for 6 months or so, by making it tolerable to drive for that time.
Yes, I've heard of Molyslip - I was hoping someone would have some actual experience of using it in this kind of situation?
Cheers.

Try Redline heavy shockproof gear oil. If you haven't got an LSD you can use this stuff. It's helping bigtime with my gearbox. It was giving serious problems, not any more. It will cut down on noise and save your diff for a good while yet.
You just have to make sure your old oil is nice and hot before you drain just to make sure all the oil drains out and diff is as clean as poss, then fill it with heavy shockproof as you can't mix this stuff.
Not cheap but well worth it IMHO!!
