Basic pointers re Imprezas please . . . what model/year and how much to pay . . ?

Want something superior, good looking, fun, fast, reliable for occassional daily commute - hence considering an Impreza (looked at Celica 190s today, but decided against). Would want a model that is stress free and unstressed - certainly don't need 300bhp+. Tend to keep my cars a long time so want a good one.

COULD pay up to 10k but would much prefer nearer 5!

Any thoughts/ideas/dos/don'ts? Thanks!

Subaru's are good cars and reliable.
A P1 would be a nice car to buy but you need to pay top dollar for a good one.
I would be tempted to buy a nice RB5 if i was you or you could buy a 2006 WRX just going out of warranty for about £10K if you want a newish car.
If going for a 2006 WRX get one with the full leather interior as i dont think the standard WRX interior is up to much.
Only down side to the 2006 car is the high tax band it is in but i think soon all cars of that type will be in the same hefty tax band.

Good luck.

Brilliant - thanks: so will look for cracking straight:

P1 (promise it's tractable (is that a word?) for occassional commute??).
RB5
WRX with leather.

very tractable as it was prodrives baby.the spring and damping rates were also sorted on uk roads.your gran could drive it.you know your driving something special too,and they will be very sought after in a few years.Just remember if the engine goes pop it'll be £4k to rebuild...

Imprezas are brilliant cars, have owned my '05 WRX (with PPP) for a year now and have loved every minute of it. I looked at all sorts before buying mine and the WRX with PPP struck the right balance for me (use it for commuting) - I have to say it's lived up to all my expectations - usable on motorways and brilliant on A/B roads.

Personally I find buying private helps as you get a better idea of the owner (and therefore how the car is likely to have been looked after).

Anyway, should you decide a mint, '05 WRX PPP in silver is what your after let me know... whistle

Just thinking of the one I saw in my mirror fish-tailing quite wildly up the sliproad to the M3 last weekend; are they prone to this on damp roads or was it just a numpty driver?

probably a numpty driver, but without being there and seeing it first hand, impossible to say for sure.

To get an Imprezza out of shape on a public road you have to be going much faster than common sence would tell you was safe.
Err, that could apply to anything, let me try again.

Imprezzas handle well, and have a lot of grip, thats one reason they are so popular. ( and to quote another thread I read by someone against them, "they are boring because you can go round corners so quickly with no skill"). Therefore, if you drive an Imprezza and get it out of shape on a public road, you are going way way to fast for a public road. (unlike, say an MX5 where you can go sideways round roundabouts without breaking the sppedlimit)

my fav would be the WR1, but alas i can't afford one yet, so i have a WRX, mildly modded and mapped to just over 280bhp and 320ft/lbs (it's the 2.5). and i never tire of it, in fact i have a day of work tomorrow and am actually exited to go for a spin, i have had it 18months and that feeling never wears off. you wont regret it....

If you're wanting something more unstressed then the newer cars are generally better. Classics are lighter, more raw, more involving etc but newage cars are stronger, more reliable etc and easier to find good examples that haven't been abused or molested.

I had 50 odd thousand trouble free miles in a newage (03) WRX. Now got an RB320 and am constantly entertained (21k in 18 months).
