Surely, a hero is someone who risks their life KNOWINGLY, to save someone else's .
Why does the media call someone a hero when they are recovering from being mugged or a soldier that is killed while he carries out his normal duties? The soldier may be brave, but if killed whilst carrying out normal duties is a loss and unfortunate, even tragic, but not neccesarily a hero, and the mugged individual is a victim of circumstance. Does the media do this because we are short of real heroes?
I don't wish to diminish the efforts of our forces and, indeed, have a lot of respect for them, but my problem is with professionals in the media.
