So 40 years later the Vatican say they "forgive" John Lennon.

These people are so out of touch, he's dead !

Given that forgiveness is a major Christian Catholic virtue and these people are meant to be setting an example at the top of the food chain, what took them so long? How about 40 seconds?

They are not the speediest organisation in the world. They only took Galileo's writings off the banned list in the 1980s.

Having said that, as Christian organisations go, they are scientifically far more literate than some fundamentalist Protestant churches. The Vatican endorsed the Big Bang theory in the 1950s (before many astronomers had decided it was correct). They have had no problem with evolution either for decades. Don't forget, the Vatican runs their own observatory (at Castel Gendolfo) and many Jesuits are qualified scientists - including quite a few astronomers.

On the Lennon thing, he actually apologised for what he said at the time, something some celebs of today might take heed of.

I actually do. I'm a Christian yet love watching Richard Dawkin's lectures.
You can't spend your whole time just watching/listening to people that confirm your own beliefs
- hence why most people who watch TV tend to be lacking in intellectual scope. (that sounds arrogant, but YKWIM).
What you call an "hour of preaching" is really all about the shocking state of Christianity these days, alluding to the OP.
