I had the red ring of death - sent it off and got a new one back rather than the same one in order apparently "to get you back to playing games as quickly as possible" or some such. It says build date August 2008 on it. I therefore thought that being rather new it could be an HDMI equipped one but no such luck.

Does anyone know how to find out which chipset it is? Perhaps it's just refurbished rather than new because it's still got a noisy dvd drive and the fans are even louder than my first xbox (which was a 2006 model so one of the earlyish ones).

Or perhaps is there a mod/hack? Is it perhaps a new HDMI model's internals stuffed into the case of a non-HDMI xbox and if I opened it up I'd find an HDMI connector?

yeah right..

To answer my own question, according to the use of this page
http://forums.xbox.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=158045...

and a desk lamp, I have an original launch model xbox replacement but with a build date of 08-2008 on it! So it must be refurbished. I would ASSUME that it's been upgraded/repaired/fixed from the standard launch model system so as not to RROD any more.. though I don't know how it would have because I didn't think they really even knew what the reason was for it doing it and it's just been fixed on later revisions.

Otherwise what's the point in even sending it to me. This is my 3rd system (1st was faulty straight from the shop).
