Wii - what do I actually need?

The controllers for the Wii are a Wii Remote (sort of TV remote control shape) and a Nunchuk. The Nunchuk is a pistol grip type controller that plugs into the Wii Remote to allow two handed operation on certain games, e.g. Boxing on Wii Sports.
Ideally you want one of each type remote (Remote + Nunchuk) for each player, as standard the Wii console comes with one Remote and one Nunchuk.
Seperately Wii Remotes are about £25-£30 each ( www.Simplygames.com £26.79), Nunchuks are about £12-£15.
A good way of getting a Wii remote is to buy the "Wii Play" game which comes with a Remote, if you shop around you can pick this up for £30 or less so it makes the game free or very cheap (it needs to be it's not a stunner, if you don't like it sell it on Ebay, kids will like it though).
It might also be worth getting a recharge station for the Remotes or at least if you don't already a seperate charger and rechargeable AA batteries. It will save money in the long run.
As for Mario Kart you can pick up bundles now that will include Mario Kart and the wheel, e.g. www.Simplygames.com do a bundle for £214. The Wheel is not exactly rocket science, just a steering wheel shaped bit of plastic to hold the Wii Remote. You can get the official wheel seperately for about £10.
No doubt there will be bargains to had coming up to Christmas, it will probably be the first year when you can actually get a Wii fairly easily and probably under RRP. I have seen offers for the console for £159 in the past few months so just keep an eye out.

My advice would be to get, at a minimum, 3 Wii remotes and nunchucks. I know it'll seem expensive, but trust me - the 3 kids can all play together and is just so much fun.
Or get a 4th of each, and you can join in too.
You don't need the nunchuck for Mario Kart, but would be really helpful for many other games.
The steering wheel is a nice to have - but not 100% necessary .... although I do have 3 of them
