Any ideas on the first port of call for things to check? Car runs and pulls perfectly fine in all other respects.

Need more details as to age / model etc.

First thought would be Coil packs broken down or MAF?

Unplug the MAF and start it up - if it runs better it'll be your first port of call. Could also be (amongst other things!) the coolant temp sender.

MAF first, then a ditry throttle body then temp sensor.

It's in the garage this weekend, so will be giving everything the once over. From years of owning hunting 205 GTi's, I'd wonderered about the air flow meter ... Any tips on cleaning it (if possible), or are they just junk once they start to play up.

Years of pug ownership also have granted the necessary skills to approach junctions on the brakes with the edge of the right foot blipping the throttle smile

Clean the throttle body - my golf 1.8T used to do this occasionally (once or twice every couple of years) and a squirt of carb cleaner cured it.

Some clean up, some don't. Mine it made no difference whatsoever so I just had to stump up the £100 for a new one (they will require the old one back BTW - so don't bin it! Nearly cost me £40 extra...)

Fingers crossed then. It's done 120k in nearly 10 years, so hardly the end of the world if it needs a few sheckles chucking at it.

Sorted biggrin

Changed the air flow meter, oil, filter, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, and repaired a split in the vacumn pipe off of the inlet manifold.

She's running like a dream again. Ticking over perfect, and lots smoother. Everything done for less than a ton, and all fitted and fettled in about 90 minutes ..... then another 30 minutes spent cleaning the old oil from the garage floor after I accidently kicked the drain pan, and knocked a "gloop" out frown

under a ton?! Where did you get the MAF from, cost me £101 for that alone!

GSF. Was about £65 inc VAT with a £25 surcharge that I need to claim back. It's therefore reconditioned, but all they are likely to have kept is the pastic body anyway.

Bizarre - both they and Euro quoted exactly the same as Audi (all of whom have the surcharge). Must be a different one.

no mines the 2.4 V6 but I was told they used the same units - obviously incorrectly!
